- 1.A number, n, is tripled and then 4.5 is added. The result is 22.5. Form an equation and solve it to find n.
- 2.A distance-time graph is a straight line from (0, 0) to (4, 100), where time is in hours and distance is in kilometres. Work out the gradient of the line.
- 3.A square tile has an area of 144 cm². Work out the side length of the tile.
- 4.A student uses the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = √(7xₙ + 3) to find an approximate solution of an equation. Work out which equation this iterative formula solves.
- 5.Kai writes the expression 8 − 3x + 5x² and says it has three terms. Ryan says it only has two terms because a number on its own is not a term. Work out the correct number of terms in the expression.
- 6.The equation x² − x − 6 = 0 has roots x = 3 and x = −2. It can be rearranged as xₙ₊₁ = xₙ² − 6. This formula is used with starting value x₀ = 2.9, close to the root x = 3. Work out what happens to the sequence of values as n increases.
- 7.A cafe sells coffees at £c each and pastries at £p each. Three coffees and two pastries cost £9.60. Two coffees and two pastries cost £7.60. Work out the price of one coffee.
- 8.The equation x³ − 3x − 4 = 0 has a root near x = 2. Four students each try a different iterative formula, all starting from x₀ = 2: xₙ₊₁ = ∛(3xₙ + 4); xₙ₊₁ = (xₙ³ − 4) ÷ 3; xₙ₊₁ = 4 ÷ (xₙ² − 3); xₙ₊₁ = xₙ³ − 2xₙ − 4. Only one of these formulas keeps producing values that settle near the root when it is repeated. Work out x₁, correct to 3 decimal places, for the formula that does this.
- 9.The mean of four numbers is 12.5. Three of the numbers are 8, 15 and 19. Form an equation using n for the fourth number, and solve it to find n.
- 10.A rectangle has width x cm. Its length is 3 cm more than its width. The perimeter of the rectangle is 38 cm. Form an equation and solve it to find x.
- 11.Work out the value of 4p² − 3 when p = 2.5
- 12.The diagram shows a distance–time graph for a cyclist travelling at a constant speed, for the first 6 minutes of a journey. Distance is in kilometres and time is in minutes. Work out how far the cyclist would travel in 20 minutes at the same speed.
- 13.A rectangle has length (2x + 5) cm and width (x − 2) cm. Work out an expression, in terms of x, for the perimeter of the rectangle. Give your answer in its simplest form.
- 14.A circle has centre (0, 0) and passes through the point (12, 35). Work out the equation of the circle.
- 15.A school trip costs a £15 deposit plus £9 per student for the coach. The total cost for a class is £186. Work out how many students went on the trip.
