- 1.A graph shows the total monthly cost of a mobile phone tariff against the number of minutes of calls. The line starts at £12 and stays level until 200 minutes, then rises by 5p for each further minute of calls. Use the graph to work out the total cost of a month in which 250 minutes of calls are made.
- 2.The diagram shows the graph of a quadratic function. Which equation could it represent?
- 3.Work out the gradient of the straight line that passes through the points (−1, 5) and (3, −7).
- 4.A sequence begins at 60, and each term after that is found by subtracting 7 from the term before it. Work out the 5th term of the sequence.
- 5.Line P has equation y = −2x + 5 and line Q has equation 2y = x + 6. Are lines P and Q perpendicular to each other?y = -2x + 5y = x + 6
- 6.The curve y = 2x² − 12x + 7 has a minimum point. By completing the square, find the value of x at which the minimum occurs.y = 2x² − 12x + 7
- 7.y = 5 − 2x. Work out the value of x when y = 11.
- 8.Line L has equation y = 2x + 3. Work out the equation of the line perpendicular to L that passes through the point (4, 1), giving your answer in the form x + 2y = c.y = 2x + 3
- 9.Point R has coordinates (3, −5). Point R is reflected in the line y = 2 to point S. Write down the coordinates of S.
- 10.A bacteria colony doubles every 4 hours and its size is recorded only every 4 hours. The recorded population 20 hours after the start is 9,600. After how many hours did the recorded population first exceed 1,000?
- 11.The graph of y = x² − 7x + 2 crosses the x-axis at two points. One root, read from the graph, is approximately x = 0.30. Using the fact that the sum of the two roots of x² − 7x + 2 = 0 is 7, estimate the other root, correct to 2 decimal places.y = x² − 7x + 2
- 12.A student attempts to prove that the sum of any three consecutive integers is a multiple of 3. Line 1: Let the three consecutive integers be n, n + 1 and n + 2. Line 2: Their sum is n + (n + 1) + (n + 2) = 3n + 2. Line 3: 3n + 2 leaves a remainder of 2 when divided by 3, so it is not a multiple of 3. Line 4: So the sum of three consecutive integers is not always a multiple of 3. Which line contains the FIRST error?
- 13.Work out the value of (x − 4)/2 + 3 when x = 10
- 14.A graph passes through the point (0, 1). As x increases through positive values, the graph rises more and more steeply, and as x decreases through negative values, the graph gets closer and closer to the x-axis without ever reaching it. Which of these could be the equation of the graph?
- 15.Make x the subject of the formula y = 3(x + 2).
