- 1.Solve the inequality 5x − 3 > 2x + 9.
- 2.Factorise x² − 3x − 10.
- 3.Which of these equations is equivalent to 5x − 2 = 3x + 8?
- 4.A student is proving that (n + 1)² − n² is always an odd number. Which of these correctly completes the first line of algebra?
- 5.A student solves the simultaneous equations 2x + y = 11 and x − y = 1 by elimination, adding the two equations together. Which of these is the correct result of that step?
- 6.A circle has centre (0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 8. Work out the radius of the circle, giving your answer as a surd in its simplest form.
- 7.A student attempts to prove that the sum of any three consecutive integers is a multiple of 3. Line 1: Let the three consecutive integers be n, n + 1 and n + 2. Line 2: Their sum is n + (n + 1) + (n + 2) = 3n + 2. Line 3: 3n + 2 leaves a remainder of 2 when divided by 3, so it is not a multiple of 3. Line 4: So the sum of three consecutive integers is not always a multiple of 3. Which line contains the FIRST error?
- 8.A company charges for hiring chairs for a day. Hiring 1 chair costs £12, hiring 2 chairs costs £19, hiring 3 chairs costs £26, and hiring 4 chairs costs £33. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the cost in pounds of hiring n chairs for a day.
- 9.A mobile phone plan charges a fixed monthly fee plus an amount for each gigabyte of data used. The total cost £C for using g gigabytes in a month is given by C = 15 + 2g. What does the number 2 represent in this formula?
- 10.Solve x² − 100 = 0.
- 11.The graph of y = f(x) has roots at x = −1 and x = 4, and crosses the y-axis at (0, −8). Which statement about the graph of y = f(x − 3) is correct?
- 12.One solution of the equation x² − (k + 1)x + k = 0 is x = 3. Work out the value of k.
- 13.A car park charges a £4 fixed fee plus £3 for each hour. Kofi has exactly £25 to spend on parking. Using the inequality 4 + 3h ≤ 25, work out the greatest number of whole hours, h, he can park for.
- 14.The simultaneous equations 2x + 3y = 12 and x − y = 1 are given. Work out the value of y.
- 15.Make x the subject of the formula y = 4x − 3.y = 4x − 3
