- 1.Simplify 2/(x + 1) + 3/(x − 2), giving your answer as a single fraction.
- 2.Solve the inequality 5 − x ≤ 2.
- 3.Water is poured into a container at a constant rate. A graph of the depth of the water, in cm, against the time since pouring began, in minutes, is a straight line through the origin, and it passes through the point (3, 12). Use the graph to work out the depth of the water after 7 minutes.
- 4.Rosie is asked whether 4(x + 3) = 4x + 12 is an equation or an identity. Which statement is correct? Give a reason for your answer.
- 5.A tram sets off from a stop. Its velocity-time graph rises in a straight line from 0 m/s to 12 m/s over the first 8 seconds, then stays constant at 12 m/s for a further 10 seconds. Work out the total distance the tram travels in these 18 seconds, using the area under the graph.
- 6.A car's journey is represented by a velocity-time graph. The total distance travelled, found from the area under the graph, is 350 metres, and the total time for the journey is 25 seconds. Work out the car's average speed for the whole journey, in m/s.
- 7.Work out the equation of the straight line that passes through (−2, 3) and (4, −9).
- 8.Which of these equations gives a graph with two separate curved branches — one where x and y are both positive, and one where x and y are both negative?
- 9.A plumber charges a call-out fee of £30 plus £25 per hour worked. Work out the total charge for a job that takes 3 hours.
- 10.Tom buys 2 notebooks and 6 pencils on Monday, priced at p pence each for a notebook and q pence each for a pencil. On Tuesday he buys 3 more notebooks and 1 more pencil. Write a simplified expression, in pence, for the total amount Tom has spent on notebooks and pencils.
- 11.In a shop a shirt costs £x and a pair of trousers costs £(2x + 30). Together the two items cost at least £150. Work out the lowest possible price of the shirt.
- 12.There are 50 adults on a coach to the Lake District. Every adult is either a man or a woman. There are 10 more men than women. Work out the number of men.
- 13.A tap fills a tank at a varying rate. A graph shows the rate of flow, in litres per minute, against time, in minutes. What does the area under this graph represent?
- 14.The point (−4, 3) lies on the circle x² + y² = 25, which has centre (0, 0). Work out the equation of the tangent to the circle at (−4, 3), giving your answer in the form y = mx + c.
- 15.A circle has equation x² + y² = 49. Work out the coordinates of the point(s) on the circle where the tangent is horizontal.
