- 1.A candidate solves the simultaneous equations y = x − 2 and y = x² − 4x + 2 by substitution. They write: "x − 2 = x² − 4x + 2, so x² − 3x + 4 = 0." Which of these is a correct comment on the candidate's working?y = x − 2y = x² − 4x + 2
- 2.The line y = 2x + 7 and the circle x² + y² = 4 are given. By finding the discriminant of the resulting quadratic, without solving it fully, work out how many points the line and the circle intersect at.y = 2x + 7
- 3.The point A(−6, 8) lies on the circle x² + y² = 100, whose centre is the origin O. The tangent to the circle at A crosses the y-axis at the point B. Work out the length of OB.
- 4.Solve 2(x + 3) = 10
- 5.A rule turns each input x into an output y. The inputs are x = 0, 1, 2, 3 and the outputs are y = 4, 7, 10, 13. Work out the output when x = 5.
- 6.A rectangular photo has length (x + 3) cm and width x cm. Its area is 40 cm². Work out the value of x.
- 7.The area of a circle is given by the formula A = πr², where r is the radius. Rearrange the formula to make r the subject.
- 8.Work out the coordinates of the point where the graph of y = 2x − 6 crosses the x-axis.y = 2x − 6
- 9.Solve 2x + 7 = x + 13
- 10.A point has coordinates (x, y), where x + y = 0 and x is not 0. In which two quadrants could this point lie?
- 11.A cyclist's velocity increases from 3 m/s to 11 m/s over 5 seconds, at a constant rate. Work out the cyclist's acceleration, in m/s².
- 12.The graph of y = f(x) has a maximum turning point at (−1, 6). Write down the coordinates of the maximum turning point of the graph of y = f(x − 3).
- 13.The graph of y = f(x) has a minimum point at (4, −1). Write down the coordinates of the corresponding turning point on the graph of y = −f(x).
- 14.Write down the expression that means the same as 'subtract 5 from n, then divide the result by 2'.
- 15.The graph of y = 60 × (0.5)ˣ is sketched for x ≥ 0. Which statement correctly describes what happens to the curve as x increases?
