- 1.A straight line has equation y = 4 − 3x. Work out the gradient of the line.
- 2.f(x) = 2x² + 1 and g(x) = x − 1. Work out fg(x), giving your answer in expanded form.y = 2x² + 1
- 3.Tom is asked to classify the statement 5(2x − 3) = 10x − 15. Which statement about it is correct?
- 4.Write down the expression that means 5 more than half of n.
- 5.A caterer uses the formula C = 6p + 20 to work out the total cost, £C, of a buffet for p people, where £20 covers fixed costs. A customer is charged £92. Work out how many people, p, the buffet was for.
- 6.A student says that (x + 4)² is equivalent to x² + 16. For which value of x do the two expressions give the SAME result, making it look (misleadingly) like the student could be right?
- 7.A student attempts to prove that the product of two consecutive integers is always even: (i) Let the two consecutive integers be n and n + 1. (ii) Since n(n + 1) is even, one of n and n + 1 must be an even number. (iii) Therefore, n(n + 1) is even. At which statement does the proof first assume the very fact it is trying to prove?
- 8.On a distance-time graph, a horizontal line segment shows a period when the graph's gradient is 0. What does this tell you about the journey during that time?
- 9.Solve the simultaneous equations 2x + y = 7 and x − y = 2.
- 10.Factorise fully 5x + 5y − 5
- 11.A straight line passes through the points (2, 7) and (5, 16). Work out the value of y when x = 0.
- 12.A ramp rises 3 m over a horizontal distance of 12 m. Work out the gradient of the ramp.
- 13.A square has vertices at (−2, 3), (−2, −3) and (4, −3). Write down the coordinates of the fourth vertex.
- 14.A quadratic curve has a root at x = −2 and its turning point has x-coordinate 3. Work out the curve's other root, using the symmetry of the graph.
- 15.A ball is thrown in the air. Its height, h metres, above the ground after t seconds is given in this table: when t = 0, h = 0; when t = 1, h = 15; when t = 2, h = 20; when t = 3, h = 15; when t = 4, h = 0. Use the table to find the two times, in seconds, at which the ball is at ground level.
