- 1.Simplify 2/(x + 1) + 3/(x − 2), giving your answer as a single fraction.
- 2.A straight line has equation 4y = 12x + 20. Work out the gradient of the line.y = 12x + 20
- 3.a = 2 and b = 5. Work out the value of a²b.
- 4.Which of these is a factor of 15x + 20?
- 5.To rearrange the formula y = 3x − 8 to make x the subject, Priya writes: 'Add 8 to both sides to get y + 8 = 3x, then divide both sides by 3 to get x = y + 8 ÷ 3.' Work out the correct expression for x.y = 3x − 8
- 6.A rule turns each input x into an output y. The inputs are x = −1, 0, 1, 2 and the matching outputs are y = 5, 3, 1, −1. Work out the rule.
- 7.A garden path runs along the line 4x + y = 12. A drainage pipe must be laid perpendicular to the path, passing through the point (3, 1) where a sprinkler sits. Work out the equation of the pipe's line, giving your answer in the form y = mx + c.
- 8.Work out the gradient of a line that is perpendicular to the line with equation 2x + 3y = 6.
- 9.A tank already contains some water and is then filled at a constant rate. After 2 minutes it contains 50 litres in total; after 7 minutes it contains 150 litres in total. Work out the rate at which water is added, in litres per minute.
- 10.A geometric sequence begins 162, 54, 18, 6, ... Work out the next term in the sequence.
- 11.A circle has centre (0, 0) and passes through the point (12, 35). Work out the equation of the circle.
- 12.Points A(−1, 2) and B(5, 8) are the endpoints of a line segment. Work out the equation of the perpendicular bisector of AB.
- 13.Work out the coordinates of the point where the graph of y = 2x − 6 crosses the x-axis.y = 2x − 6
- 14.A hiker's distance-time graph shows the following: he walks 5 km in the first 1 hour at a steady speed, rests for 1 hour, then walks a further 9 km in the next 2 hours, also at a steady speed. Work out his average speed for the whole journey, in km/h.
- 15.Write y = x² + 12x + 40 in the form (x + a)² + b, and hence write down the minimum value of y.y = x² + 12x + 40
