- 1.The graph of y = f(x) has a maximum turning point at (−1, 6). Write down the coordinates of the maximum turning point of the graph of y = f(x − 3).
- 2.A walker's distance-time graph is described as follows: she walks 3 km in the first 15 minutes at a steady speed, rests for 10 minutes, then walks a further 3 km in the next 20 minutes, also at a steady speed. Work out her speed, in km/h, during the first 15 minutes.
- 3.The formula y = x² + 1 gives y in terms of x. Work out the value of y when x = −2.y = x² + 1
- 4.A circle has centre (0, 0) and passes through the point (7, 24). Work out the equation of the circle.
- 5.A straight line passes through the points (−1, 2) and (3, 14). Work out the equation of the line.
- 6.A square has vertices at (−2, 3), (−2, −3) and (4, −3). Write down the coordinates of the fourth vertex.
- 7.The tangent to a curve at the point (6, 1) has gradient −3. Work out the y-coordinate of the point where this tangent crosses the y-axis.
- 8.(2x + 3)(x + a) ≡ 2x² + 11x + 12 is an identity. Work out the value of a.
- 9.A point has coordinates (x, y). In which two quadrants is the product x × y positive?
- 10.The tangent to a curve at the point where x = 4 passes through the points (2, 5) and (6, 21). Use these two points to estimate the gradient of the curve at x = 4.
- 11.Which expression means 'add 3 to n, then multiply the result by 4'?
- 12.Solve the simultaneous equations 2x + y = 7 and x − y = 2.
- 13.A straight line has gradient −3 and passes through the point (0, 1). Work out the value of y when x = 2.
- 14.Look at the statement 2x + 5 = 17. Considering whether it is an expression, an equation, a formula, or an identity, which classification is correct?
- 15.A candidate solves the inequality x² > 9 and writes: "x² > 9, so x > 3." Which of these is a correct comment on the candidate's work?
