- 1.A straight line has equation y = 4x + 3. A second line is parallel to the first line and passes through the point (0, −5). Work out the equation of the second line.y = 4x + 3
- 2.Three consecutive integers add up to 72. Using n for the smallest integer, form an equation and solve it to find the smallest of the three integers.
- 3.Which expression is equivalent to 3(x + 4) − 2(x − 1)?
- 4.The table shows some values of f(x): when x = 0, f(x) = 5; when x = 1, f(x) = 8; when x = 2, f(x) = 4; when x = 3, f(x) = 1. Work out the value of f(x − 1) when x = 2.
- 5.Solve the simultaneous equations 4x + 3y = 25 and 4x − y = 1. Work out the value of y.
- 6.The graph of y = f(x) has a minimum turning point at (4, −5). The graph of y = f(x) + a has a minimum turning point whose minimum VALUE is 2. Work out the value of a, and state the coordinates of the minimum turning point of y = f(x) + a.
- 7.The tangent to a curve at the point where x = 4 passes through the points (2, 5) and (6, 21). Use these two points to estimate the gradient of the curve at x = 4.
- 8.Solve (2x + 1)/3 = 5
- 9.The first five terms of a quadratic sequence are 6, 11, 18, 27, 38. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
- 10.A ball's height, h metres, t seconds after being thrown follows h = (t − 1)(9 − t). Given that the ball is at ground level at t = 1 and t = 9, work out at what time t the ball reaches its maximum height, using symmetry.
- 11.The diagram shows two curves drawn on the same grid. Curve A is the graph of . Which equation could represent curve B?
- 12.Which of these is an identity?
- 13.Solve (3x + 2)/5 = (x + 4)/3
- 14.The simple interest, £I, earned on a savings account is given by the formula I = PRT/100, where P is the amount invested in pounds, R is the interest rate per year and T is the time in years. Rearrange the formula to make P the subject.
- 15.A ribbon of length L metres is cut into 5 equal pieces, and then 3 metres is removed from one piece. Write down an expression, in metres, for the length of that piece after 3 metres is removed.
