- 1.n = 3. Work out the value of (2n)².
- 2.A taxi fare in pounds is given by F = 2.50 + 1.20m, where m is the number of miles travelled. Sam takes a taxi for a journey of 6 miles. Work out the fare.
- 3.A garden path runs along the line 4x + y = 12. A drainage pipe must be laid perpendicular to the path, passing through the point (3, 1) where a sprinkler sits. Work out the equation of the pipe's line, giving your answer in the form y = mx + c.
- 4.Work out the gradient of the straight line with equation 3y = 12 − 6x.
- 5.n is an integer. Which of these expressions is always an even number?
- 6.A curve has equation y = x³ − 4x. Work out the coordinates of the point where the curve crosses the y-axis.y = x
- 7.Work out the value of (x − 4)/2 + 3 when x = 10
- 8.A delivery van's distance-time graph shows the following: it travels 9 km in the first 15 minutes at a steady speed, stops for 45 minutes to unload, then travels a further 21 km in the next 30 minutes, also at a steady speed. Work out the average speed, in km/h, for the whole journey.
- 9.Isla says that the lines y = 2x + 1 and y = −2x + 3 are parallel. Write down the statement that gives the correct answer for the correct reason.y = 2x + 1y = -2x + 3
- 10.The discriminant of a quadratic equation is greater than zero. Which statement about the solutions of that equation is correct?
- 11.The equation x² − 6x + k = 0 has exactly one solution. Work out the value of k.
- 12.The nth term of a sequence is n² + 4n. Work out the term number, n, for which the term equals 45.
- 13.A gym charges a reduced price for the first month of membership and a standard price for every month after that. The total cost is £5 for 1 month, £12 for 2 months, £19 for 3 months and £26 for 4 months. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the total cost, in pounds, of n months of membership.
- 14.The area under a speed-time graph between t = 0 and t = 6 seconds is estimated using three strips of equal width, using the speeds, in m/s, at t = 0, 2, 4 and 6: 0, 5, 9 and 12. Using the trapezium rule with these three trapezia, estimate the distance travelled.
- 15.Write down the first four terms of the sequence with nth term 6n − 5.
