- 1.Line C passes through (0, 0) and (4, 2). Line D passes through (0, 0) and (2, 2). Write down which of the two lines is the steeper.
- 2.Solve x² − 5x + 6 = 0 by factorising.
- 3.A taxi fare in pounds is given by F = 2.50 + 1.20m, where m is the number of miles travelled. Sam takes a taxi for a journey of 6 miles. Work out the fare.
- 4.A gym charges a joining fee plus a monthly fee. Anna paid £100 in total after 3 months of membership. Ben paid £160 in total after 6 months of membership (same joining fee and monthly fee as Anna). Work out the monthly fee.
- 5.Solve x² − 8x + 3 = 0 by completing the square. Give your answers in surd form.
- 6.Which expression is equivalent to 7x − 3(2x − 6)?
- 7.Simplify (2x² + 7x + 3) ÷ (x² − 9), giving your answer as a single fraction.
- 8.The diagram shows part of the graph of a reciprocal function of the form , passing through the labelled point. Work out the value of k.
- 9.Work out the gradient of the straight line that passes through the points (−1, 5) and (3, −7).
- 10.A candidate solves the simultaneous equations y = x − 2 and y = x² − 4x + 2 by substitution. They write: "x − 2 = x² − 4x + 2, so x² − 3x + 4 = 0." Which of these is a correct comment on the candidate's working?y = x − 2y = x² − 4x + 2
- 11.A ball is thrown in the air. Its height, h metres, above the ground after t seconds is given in this table: when t = 0, h = 0; when t = 1, h = 15; when t = 2, h = 20; when t = 3, h = 15; when t = 4, h = 0. Use the table to find the two times, in seconds, at which the ball is at ground level.
- 12.The function f(x) = x² for all real values of x has no inverse function, but g(x) = x² for x ≥ 0 does have one. Which statement correctly explains this?y = x²
- 13.The curve y = x² − 6 and the line y = 2x − 3 intersect at two points. Which pair of points is correct?y = 2x − 3y = x² − 6
- 14.A region R satisfies y ≤ x + 1, x + y ≤ 5 and y ≥ 0. Which of these correctly describes R in words?
- 15.The point A(−6, 8) lies on the circle x² + y² = 100, whose centre is the origin O. The tangent to the circle at A crosses the y-axis at the point B. Work out the length of OB.
