- 1.A number, n, is doubled and then 7 is subtracted. The result is 15. Form an equation and solve it to find n.
- 2.A circle has centre (0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 100. A straight line is drawn from the origin through the point P(8, 9). Work out whether P lies inside, on, or outside the circle.
- 3.The graph of y = mx + 6 passes through the point (−2, 0). Work out the value of m.
- 4.Simplify 2/(x + 1) + 3/(x − 2), giving your answer as a single fraction.
- 5.f(x) = 2x − 1. Work out ff(x).y = 2x − 1
- 6.A square has vertices at (−2, 3), (−2, −3) and (4, −3). Write down the coordinates of the fourth vertex.
- 7.A plumber charges a £35 call-out fee plus £20 for each hour worked, h. On a certain job the total charge was £115. Work out how many hours the plumber worked.
- 8.A cafe sells coffees at £c each and pastries at £p each. Three coffees and two pastries cost £9.60. Two coffees and two pastries cost £7.60. Work out the price of one coffee.
- 9.Work out the smallest positive value of x, in degrees, for which y = tan x is undefined.y = tan(x)
- 10.A speed-time graph for a car shows the speed increasing steadily from 5 m/s to 17 m/s over 6 seconds. Work out the acceleration of the car, in m/s².
- 11.A number machine multiplies its input by 3 and then adds 7. The output is 1. Work out the input.
- 12.Which expression is equivalent to 7x − 3(2x − 6)?
- 13.A candidate solves the simultaneous equations y = x − 2 and y = x² − 4x + 2 by substitution. They write: "x − 2 = x² − 4x + 2, so x² − 3x + 4 = 0." Which of these is a correct comment on the candidate's working?y = x − 2y = x² − 4x + 2
- 14.Find the common ratio of the geometric sequence 5, 5√2, 10, 10√2, ... Give your answer in surd form.
