- 1.A sequence has the position-to-term rule n² + 2, where n is the position number. Work out the 6th term.
- 2.Solve the simultaneous equations 2x + y = 7 and x + 2y = 8.
- 3.A ball's height, h metres, t seconds after being thrown follows h = (t − 1)(9 − t). Given that the ball is at ground level at t = 1 and t = 9, work out at what time t the ball reaches its maximum height, using symmetry.
- 4.Work out the equation of the straight line that passes through (−2, 3) and (4, −9).
- 5.The graph of y = f(x) passes through the point (0, 4). Work out the y-coordinate of the point where the graph of y = −f(x) + 5 crosses the y-axis.
- 6.The first five terms of a quadratic sequence are 4, 7, 12, 19, 28. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
- 7.x = 5. Work out the value of 3x² − 4.
- 8.An equation has exactly one value of x that makes it true, but an identity is true for every value of x. Which of these best explains why 3x + 5 = 20 is an equation rather than an identity?
- 9.The graph of y = mx + 6 passes through the point (−2, 0). Work out the value of m.
- 10.The first four terms of a sequence are 6, 13, 20, 27. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
- 11.Solve 2x + 7 = x + 13
- 12.A geometric sequence has first term 5, and each term after that is 3 times the term before it. Work out the first term of the sequence that is greater than 1000.
- 13.A table of values is being drawn for the graph of y = x³. Work out the value of y when x = −2.y = x
- 14.A fundraising chain letter starts with 3 people taking part in round 1. Each following round has 4 times as many people taking part as the round before. Work out the number of people taking part in round 4.
- 15.Simplify fully: (x + 2)/(3x) × 6x²/(x² − 4)
