- 1.Make x the subject of the formula y = 3(x + 2).
- 2.A circle has centre (0, 0) and radius 9. Work out the equation of the circle.
- 3.Work out the value of the discriminant b² − 4ac for the equation 2x² + 3x − 2 = 0.
- 4.A car's fuel tank contains 50 litres when it starts a journey. After travelling for 2 hours, it contains 38 litres, and fuel is used at a constant rate. Work out the rate at which fuel is used, in litres per hour.
- 5.A tank already contains some water and is then filled at a constant rate. After 2 minutes it contains 50 litres in total; after 7 minutes it contains 150 litres in total. Work out the rate at which water is added, in litres per minute.
- 6.The perimeter of a rectangle is given by the formula P = 2(l + w), where l is the length and w is the width. A rectangular garden has a perimeter of 46 m and a length of 14 m. Rearrange the formula to make w the subject, then work out the width of the garden.
- 7.A regular hexagon has sides of length (x + 2) cm. Write down an expression, in terms of x, for the perimeter of the hexagon.
- 8.A walker's distance-time graph is described as follows: she walks 3 km in the first 15 minutes at a steady speed, rests for 10 minutes, then walks a further 3 km in the next 20 minutes, also at a steady speed. Work out her speed, in km/h, during the first 15 minutes.
- 9.A circle has centre (0, 0) and passes through the point (7, 24). Work out the equation of the circle.
- 10.A market trader builds a display of oranges in a rectangular block. The block is n oranges wide and 4 oranges longer than it is wide. The number of oranges needed is 5 when n = 1, 12 when n = 2, 21 when n = 3, 32 when n = 4, and 45 when n = 5. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the number of oranges needed for a display of width n.
- 11.The diagram shows the graph of a function. Which equation could it represent?
- 12.Solve x² − 2x − 24 = 0.
- 13.Work out the gradient of the straight line with equation 2x + y = 8.
- 14.A rectangular photo has length (x + 3) cm and width x cm. Its area is 40 cm². Work out the value of x.
- 15.A straight line has gradient −3 and passes through the point (0, 1). Work out the value of y when x = 2.
