- 1.A circle has centre (0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 3721. The point (11, 60) lies on the circle. One of these is the gradient of the tangent to the circle at (11, 60). Work out which one.
- 2.Which of these is an identity?
- 3.Solve the simultaneous equations 3x + y = 14 and x + y = 6. Work out the value of x.
- 4.A garden path runs along the line 4x + y = 12. A drainage pipe must be laid perpendicular to the path, passing through the point (3, 1) where a sprinkler sits. Work out the equation of the pipe's line, giving your answer in the form y = mx + c.
- 5.Work out the gradient of the straight line that passes through the points (−1, 5) and (3, −7).
- 6.A hot air balloon is at a height of 20 m and rises at a steady rate. After 4 minutes it is at a height of 52 m. Work out the rate at which the balloon rises, in metres per minute.
- 7.A lift has a weight limit: it must carry no more than 630 kg. Let w be the total weight, in kg, carried by the lift. Which inequality describes this?
- 8.Solve 3(2x − 1) = 27
- 9.Solve the simultaneous equations 4x + 3y = 25 and 4x − y = 1. Work out the value of y.
- 10.A rule turns each input x into an output y. An input of 1 gives an output of 1, an input of 2 gives an output of 4 and an input of 3 gives an output of 9. Work out the rule.
- 11.A cycle route is 84 km long. Freya sets off along it at a steady 14 km/h. Write down the function for the distance y, in kilometres, that is still to be cycled after x hours.
- 12.A straight line passes through the points (−1, 2) and (3, 14). Work out the equation of the line.
- 13.Solve the simultaneous equations 2x + y = 7 and x + 2y = 8.
- 14.The graph of y = f(x) has a minimum turning point at (3, −5), crosses the x-axis at x = 1, and crosses the y-axis at (0, −2). Exactly one of these statements about the graph of y = −f(x + 2) is true. Which statement is true?
- 15.The numbers x and y satisfy x + y = 10 and xy = 21. Work out the pair of values.
