- 1.Simplify 5a/6 − a/3
- 2.Two numbers have a sum of 50. The larger number is twice the smaller number. Work out the smaller number.
- 3.The equation x² = 5x − 3 is to be solved using iteration. Work out which of these iterative formulas comes from a correct rearrangement of the equation.
- 4.Write y = x² + 12x + 40 in the form (x + a)² + b, and hence write down the minimum value of y.y = x² + 12x + 40
- 5.A triangle has vertices at (1, 1), (1, 5) and (6, 1). Work out the area of the triangle.
- 6.A car park charges a £4 fixed fee plus £3 for each hour. Kofi has exactly £25 to spend on parking. Using the inequality 4 + 3h ≤ 25, work out the greatest number of whole hours, h, he can park for.
- 7.The graph of y = cos x is transformed onto the graph of y = cos(x − 90°). State the direction of the translation and which standard graph the image is.y = cos(x)
- 8.A plumber charges a call-out fee of £30 plus £25 for each hour worked. The total bill for a job was £130. Work out how many hours the plumber worked.
- 9.The table shows the speed, in m/s, of a car at times, in seconds, all 2 seconds apart: 0 at t = 0, 3 at t = 2, 8 at t = 4, 15 at t = 6, 24 at t = 8. A student uses the trapezium rule with these five readings to estimate the distance the car travels. By finding the second differences of the speed values, decide whether this trapezium estimate is an overestimate or an underestimate of the true distance.
- 10.A graph has equation y = −2x² + 5. Which statement about its shape is correct?y = -2x² + 5
- 11.Work out the gradient of the straight line with equation 3y = 12 − 6x.
- 12.A straight line has gradient −2 and passes through the point (3, 1). Work out the equation of the line.
- 13.Solve 2x² = 18.
- 14.A candidate solves the simultaneous equations y = x − 2 and y = x² − 4x + 2 by substitution. They write: "x − 2 = x² − 4x + 2, so x² − 3x + 4 = 0." Which of these is a correct comment on the candidate's working?y = x − 2y = x² − 4x + 2
- 15.Work out the value of 3a − 2b when a = 5 and b = 4
