- 1.Simplify (x² − 9) ÷ (x² + 5x + 6).
- 2.The diagram shows the graph of the cost, in pounds, of a taxi journey plotted against the distance travelled, in miles, for journeys of up to 4 miles. The same fixed charge and the same cost per mile apply to longer journeys. Work out the cost of a 6-mile journey.
- 3.A charity's fundraising total, T pounds, over d days follows T = (d − 3)(30 − d) for 3 ≤ d ≤ 30, where T = 0 marks the start and end of the campaign. Work out how many days the campaign runs for, from start to end.
- 4.f(x) = x² − 1 and g(x) = 3x. Work out fg(4).y = x² − 1
- 5.The perimeter of a rectangle is given by the formula P = 2(l + w), where l is the length and w is the width. A rectangular garden has a perimeter of 46 m and a length of 14 m. Rearrange the formula to make w the subject, then work out the width of the garden.
- 6.A speed-time graph shows a constant speed of 15 m/s for 20 seconds. Work out the distance travelled, using the area under the graph.
- 7.Ben writes n + 4 ≤ 9. Which statement describes what Ben has written? Give a reason for your answer.
- 8.Look at the statement 2x + 5 = 17. Considering whether it is an expression, an equation, a formula, or an identity, which classification is correct?
- 9.For 0 ≤ x ≤ 360, the equation sin x = 0.5 has two solutions. What are they?
- 10.The graph of y = sin x is transformed onto the graph of y = sin x + 1. Which statement correctly describes the transformation and the new range of the graph?y = sin(x)
- 11.A pattern is made from tiles. Pattern 1 uses 4 tiles, pattern 2 uses 7 tiles, pattern 3 uses 10 tiles and pattern 4 uses 13 tiles, with each pattern using 3 more tiles than the one before. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the number of tiles used in pattern n.
- 12.Factorise 6x² − 7x − 3.
- 13.A student attempts to prove that the sum of any three consecutive integers is a multiple of 3. Line 1: Let the three consecutive integers be n, n + 1 and n + 2. Line 2: Their sum is n + (n + 1) + (n + 2) = 3n + 2. Line 3: 3n + 2 leaves a remainder of 2 when divided by 3, so it is not a multiple of 3. Line 4: So the sum of three consecutive integers is not always a multiple of 3. Which line contains the FIRST error?
- 14.The graph of y = x² − 7x + 2 crosses the x-axis at two points. One root, read from the graph, is approximately x = 0.30. Using the fact that the sum of the two roots of x² − 7x + 2 = 0 is 7, estimate the other root, correct to 2 decimal places.y = x² − 7x + 2
- 15.A population of bacteria doubles every 3 hours. It starts at 800. Work out the population after 9 hours.
