- 1.A sequence begins at 50, and each term after that is found by subtracting 8 from the term before it. Priya says the 8th term of the sequence is negative. Is Priya correct?
- 2.The point (−4, 3) lies on the circle x² + y² = 25, which has centre (0, 0). Work out the equation of the tangent to the circle at (−4, 3), giving your answer in the form y = mx + c.
- 3.Write down the expression that means the same as (x + 7) ÷ 4.
- 4.A gym charges a reduced price for the first month of membership and a standard price for every month after that. The total cost is £5 for 1 month, £12 for 2 months, £19 for 3 months and £26 for 4 months. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the total cost, in pounds, of n months of membership.
- 5.Work out the coordinates of the midpoint of the line segment joining (−3, 5) and (7, 9).
- 6.Solve x² − 8x + 3 = 0 by completing the square. Give your answers in surd form.
- 7.A region R satisfies y ≤ x + 1, x + y ≤ 5 and y ≥ 0. Which of these correctly describes R in words?
- 8.A delivery van's distance-time graph shows the following: it travels 9 km in the first 15 minutes at a steady speed, stops for 45 minutes to unload, then travels a further 21 km in the next 30 minutes, also at a steady speed. Work out the average speed, in km/h, for the whole journey.
- 9.A cyclist's speed-time graph is described as follows: speed increases steadily from 0 m/s to 8 m/s over the first 4 seconds, stays constant at 8 m/s for the next 6 seconds, then decreases steadily to 0 m/s over the final 2 seconds. Work out the total distance travelled.
- 10.The first five terms of a quadratic sequence are 6, 11, 18, 27, 38. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
- 11.The formula for the perimeter of a rectangle is P = 2(l + w). One rectangle has l = 9 cm and w = 4 cm. A second rectangle has l = 6 cm and w = 5 cm. Work out how many cm greater the perimeter of the first rectangle is than the perimeter of the second.
- 12.Simplify 2/(x + 1) + 3/(x − 2), giving your answer as a single fraction.
- 13.On a distance-time graph, a horizontal line segment shows a period when the graph's gradient is 0. What does this tell you about the journey during that time?
- 14.Work out the equation of the straight line that passes through (−2, 3) and (4, −9).
- 15.The graph of y = f(x) has a maximum turning point at (−1, 6). Write down the coordinates of the maximum turning point of the graph of y = f(x − 3).
