- 1.The nth term of a geometric sequence is given by aₙ = 3 × 2ⁿ⁻¹. Work out the position of the first term that is greater than 1,000.
- 2.The curve y = x² − 6 and the line y = 2x − 3 intersect at two points. Which pair of points is correct?y = 2x − 3y = x² − 6
- 3.Solve x² + 7x = 0.
- 4.Using the table of values of f(x) (x = 0, 1, 2, 3 gives f(x) = 5, 8, 4, 1), work out the value of −f(x) when x = 1.
- 5.A ball is thrown in the air. Its height, h metres, above the ground after t seconds is given in this table: when t = 0, h = 0; when t = 1, h = 15; when t = 2, h = 20; when t = 3, h = 15; when t = 4, h = 0. Use the table to find the two times, in seconds, at which the ball is at ground level.
- 6.Line L has equation y = 2x + 3. Work out the equation of the line perpendicular to L that passes through the point (4, 1), giving your answer in the form x + 2y = c.y = 2x + 3
- 7.Simplify 5a/6 − a/3
- 8.A geometric sequence begins 162, 54, 18, 6, ... Work out the next term in the sequence.
- 9.Which expression is equivalent to 6x − (2x − 5)?
- 10.A rectangular field has length (3a + 2) metres and width (a − 1) metres. Write a simplified expression for the perimeter of the field.
- 11.The graph of y = x² − 2x − 8 takes these values: when x = −2, y = 0; when x = −1, y = −5; when x = 0, y = −8; when x = 3, y = −5; when x = 4, y = 0. Use these values to write down the two solutions of x² − 2x − 8 = 0.y = x² − 2x − 8
- 12.A coach company charges a booking fee plus a price for each passenger. A booking for 1 passenger costs £9, for 2 passengers costs £15, for 3 passengers costs £21, and for 4 passengers costs £27. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the cost in pounds of a booking for n passengers.
- 13.Solve 2x² = 18.
- 14.Solve 4x − (2x − 6) = 18
- 15.An exponential model has equation y = A × bˣ, where b > 1. Its graph passes through the points (1, 135) and (2, 405). Work out the value of A.
