- 1.A circular pond has equation x² + y² = 20, with lengths in metres from the centre of the garden. A straight path runs along the line y = 2x, entering the pond and leaving it again. Work out the coordinates of the two points where the path meets the edge of the pond.y = 2x
- 2.Solve x² − 8x + 3 = 0 by completing the square. Give your answers in surd form.
- 3.A number machine multiplies its input by 3 and then adds 7. The output is 1. Work out the input.
- 4.The table shows some values of f(x): when x = 0, f(x) = 5; when x = 1, f(x) = 8; when x = 2, f(x) = 4; when x = 3, f(x) = 1. Work out the value of f(x − 1) when x = 2.
- 5.The graph of y = x² − 2x − 8 takes these values: when x = −2, y = 0; when x = −1, y = −5; when x = 0, y = −8; when x = 3, y = −5; when x = 4, y = 0. Use these values to write down the two solutions of x² − 2x − 8 = 0.y = x² − 2x − 8
- 6.A scout leader is 44 years old and one of the scouts is 16 years old. Work out how many years it will be until the leader is exactly twice as old as the scout.
- 7.Solve x² + 7x = 0.
- 8.A student is proving that (n + 1)² − n² is always an odd number. Which of these correctly completes the first line of algebra?
- 9.A square tile has an area of 144 cm². Work out the side length of the tile.
- 10.The line y = 3x + 6 meets the x-axis at one point. Work out the coordinates of that point.y = 3x + 6
- 11.A sequence has the position-to-term rule n² + 2, where n is the position number. Work out the 6th term.
- 12.A graph passes through the point (0, 1). As x increases through positive values, the graph rises more and more steeply, and as x decreases through negative values, the graph gets closer and closer to the x-axis without ever reaching it. Which of these could be the equation of the graph?
- 13.The formula connecting distance (d), speed (s) and time (t) is d = st. Make s the subject of the formula.
- 14.Work out the coordinates of the reflection of (6, −3) in the y-axis.
- 15.Work out the gradient of the straight line with equation 2x + y = 8.
