- 1.The solution set of a quadratic inequality is {x : x ≤ −3} ∪ {x : x ≥ 5}. Which of these inequalities has this solution set?
- 2.Which of these values of x is a solution of x² + 2x − 15 = 0?
- 3.Kai writes the expression 8 − 3x + 5x² and says it has three terms. Ryan says it only has two terms because a number on its own is not a term. Work out the correct number of terms in the expression.
- 4.A ball is dropped and bounces. The height of each bounce after the first is 8 cm less than the bounce before it. The first bounce reaches 60 cm. Work out the height of the 5th bounce.
- 5.A box holds n pencils. A shop has 6 full boxes and 4 loose pencils. All of these pencils are shared equally between 2 classes. Write down the expression for the number of pencils each class receives.
- 6.A colony of bacteria doubles in number every hour. At 9am there are 5 bacteria in the colony. Work out how many bacteria there will be at 12 noon.
- 7.A circle has centre (0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 50. Work out the radius of the circle, giving your answer as a surd in its simplest form.
- 8.A Fibonacci-type sequence is defined by aₙ = aₙ₋₁ + aₙ₋₂ for n ≥ 3. Given that a₁ = 5 and a₃ = 17, work out a₂.
- 9.A geometric sequence has first term 3 and common ratio √3. Work out the position of the first term of the sequence that exceeds 30.
- 10.A tap's flow rate, in litres per minute, is plotted against time, in minutes, on a graph. What are the units of the area under this graph?
- 11.Solve the simultaneous equations x + y = 1 and 2x + y = 5.
- 12.A sequence has the position-to-term rule n² + 1, where n is the position number. Work out how much bigger the 5th term is than the 4th term.
- 13.A company's weekly profit, in £, is modelled by y = f(x), where x is the number of weeks since launch. The graph of y = f(x) has a maximum at (10, 45000). A rival company uses the same marketing strategy but starts trading 6 weeks later and has fixed costs £8000 higher every week, so its profit is modelled by y = f(x − 6) − 8000. In which week does the rival's maximum weekly profit occur, and what is it?
- 14.A distance-time graph is a straight line from (0, 0) to (4, 100), where time is in hours and distance is in kilometres. Work out the gradient of the line.
- 15.A zip-line runs from a platform 25 m high to a landing point 5 m high, over a horizontal distance of 40 m. Work out the gradient of the zip-line.
