- 1.A sequence has nth term 3n + 4. Two terms are missing from the list of its first five terms: 7, 10, _, 16, _. Work out the missing 3rd and 5th terms added together.
- 2.A car's fuel tank contains 50 litres when it starts a journey. After travelling for 2 hours, it contains 38 litres, and fuel is used at a constant rate. Work out the rate at which fuel is used, in litres per hour.
- 3.A plumber charges a call-out fee of £30 plus £25 per hour worked. Work out the total charge for a job that takes 3 hours.
- 4.A ball is thrown in the air. Its height, h metres, above the ground after t seconds is given in this table: when t = 0, h = 0; when t = 1, h = 15; when t = 2, h = 20; when t = 3, h = 15; when t = 4, h = 0. Use the table to find the two times, in seconds, at which the ball is at ground level.
- 5.The simultaneous equations 2x + 3y = 12 and x − y = 1 are given. Work out the value of y.
- 6.By completing the square, find the turning point of the curve y = 2x² − 8x + 3.y = 2x² − 8x + 3
- 7.A company charges for hiring chairs for a day. Hiring 1 chair costs £12, hiring 2 chairs costs £19, hiring 3 chairs costs £26, and hiring 4 chairs costs £33. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the cost in pounds of hiring n chairs for a day.
- 8.Describe a sequence of two transformations that maps the graph of y = cos x onto the graph of y = cos(x + 90°) − 2.y = cos(x)
- 9.The first four terms of a sequence are 2, 2√3, 6, 6√3, ... Work out the next term.
- 10.A proof that (n + 3)² − (n − 3)² is always a multiple of a certain number begins: Line 1: (n + 3)² − (n − 3)² = (n² + 6n + 9) − (n² − 6n + 9). Which expression correctly completes Line 2?
- 11.A mobile phone plan charges a fixed monthly fee plus an amount for each gigabyte of data used. The total cost £C for using g gigabytes in a month is given by C = 15 + 2g. What does the number 2 represent in this formula?
