- 2.By completing the square, show that the curve y = x² − 14x + 50 never crosses the x-axis. Which statement gives the correct reason?y = x² − 14x + 50
- 3.Factorise fully 5x + 5y − 5
- 4.The graph of y = f(x) passes through the point (2, 5). Write down the coordinates of the corresponding point on the graph of y = f(x − 4) + 1.
- 5.A student is asked whether 3(x − 4) = 3x − 4 is an identity. Which statement gives the correct verdict and reason?
- 6.Solve the simultaneous equations 2x + y = 7 and x − y = 2.
- 7.A car's fuel tank contains 50 litres when it starts a journey. After travelling for 2 hours, it contains 38 litres, and fuel is used at a constant rate. Work out the rate at which fuel is used, in litres per hour.
- 8.The point (9, 40) lies on the circle x² + y² = 1681, which has centre (0, 0). Work out the equation of the tangent to the circle at (9, 40), giving your answer in the form ax + by = c.
- 9.A garden path runs along the line 4x + y = 12. A drainage pipe must be laid perpendicular to the path, passing through the point (3, 1) where a sprinkler sits. Work out the equation of the pipe's line, giving your answer in the form y = mx + c.
- 10.Work out the gradient of the straight line that passes through the points (−1, 5) and (3, −7).
- 11.A sequence begins at 60, and each term after that is found by subtracting 7 from the term before it. Work out the 5th term of the sequence.
- 12.A point has coordinates (x, y), where x + y = 0 and x is not 0. In which two quadrants could this point lie?
- 13.There are 30 students in a Year 10 maths class. There are 2 more boys than girls. Work out the number of boys and the number of girls.
- 14.Write down the expression that means the same as 'subtract 5 from n, then divide the result by 2'.
- 15.The equation x² − 4x + k = 0 has two different real solutions. Work out the range of values of k.
