- 1.The curve y = x² − 1 and the line y = 3x − 3 meet at two points. Work out the x-coordinates of those two points.y = 3x − 3y = x² − 1
- 2.The cost, in pounds, of hiring a van for d days is given by the formula C = 25 + 18d. A customer's hire cost £133. Work out how many days, d, they hired the van for, by first rearranging the formula to make d the subject.
- 3.A sequence begins at 60, and each term after that is found by subtracting 7 from the term before it. Work out the 5th term of the sequence.
- 4.Solve x² − 8x + 3 = 0 by completing the square. Give your answers in surd form.
- 5.A straight line has gradient −2 and passes through the point (3, 1). Work out the equation of the line.
- 6.A number machine multiplies its input by 3 and then adds 7. The output is 1. Work out the input.
- 7.A square patio of side length n slabs is surrounded by a single border of square paving slabs of the same size. For a patio with side length n, the total number of slabs used for the patio and its border together is 9 when n = 1, 16 when n = 2, 25 when n = 3, and 36 when n = 4. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the total number of slabs.
- 8.A lift has a weight limit: it must carry no more than 630 kg. Let w be the total weight, in kg, carried by the lift. Which inequality describes this?
- 9.ABCD is a parallelogram. A has coordinates (−3, 1), B has coordinates (2, 1) and C has coordinates (4, 4). Work out the coordinates of D.
- 10.Solve the inequality 2(3x − 1) ≥ 4x + 8.
- 11.Rosie is asked whether 4(x + 3) = 4x + 12 is an equation or an identity. Which statement is correct? Give a reason for your answer.
- 12.Which expression means 'y squared, multiplied by 3'?
- 13.A straight line passes through the points (2, 5) and (4, 11). Work out the gradient of the line.
- 14.The nth term of a sequence is 4n − 3. Work out the 7th term of the sequence.
