- 1.A number, n, is tripled and then 4.5 is added. The result is 22.5. Form an equation and solve it to find n.
- 2.Work out the value of 2(x + 2) when x = −5
- 3.A ball is thrown in the air. Its height, h metres, above the ground after t seconds is given in this table: when t = 0, h = 0; when t = 1, h = 15; when t = 2, h = 20; when t = 3, h = 15; when t = 4, h = 0. Use the table to find the two times, in seconds, at which the ball is at ground level.
- 4.The perimeter, P, of a rectangle with length l and width w is calculated using P = 2l + 2w. What kind of mathematical statement is P = 2l + 2w?
- 5.Solve the simultaneous equations x + y = 1 and 2x + y = 5.
- 6.Two numbers have a sum of 24. Their difference is 6. Work out the two numbers.
- 7.By completing the square, find the turning point of the curve y = x² + 8x − 3.y = x² + 8x − 3
- 8.To rearrange the formula y = 3x − 8 to make x the subject, Priya writes: 'Add 8 to both sides to get y + 8 = 3x, then divide both sides by 3 to get x = y + 8 ÷ 3.' Work out the correct expression for x.y = 3x − 8
- 9.The graph of y = f(x) crosses the x-axis at x = −3 and x = 7, and crosses the y-axis at (0, 21). A second graph crosses the x-axis at x = −7 and x = 3, and crosses the y-axis at the same point, (0, 21). The second graph is y = g(x). Which of these could be the equation of g(x)?
- 10.A candidate solves the inequality x² > 9 and writes: "x² > 9, so x > 3." Which of these is a correct comment on the candidate's work?
- 11.A Fibonacci-type sequence begins 3, 5, 8, 13, ... where each term after the second is the sum of the two terms before it. Work out the 7th term of the sequence.
- 12.Write y = x² + 12x + 40 in the form (x + a)² + b, and hence write down the minimum value of y.y = x² + 12x + 40
- 13.a = 2 and b = 5. Work out the value of a²b.
- 14.Simplify 5a/6 − a/3
- 15.A garden path runs along the line 4x + y = 12. A drainage pipe must be laid perpendicular to the path, passing through the point (3, 1) where a sprinkler sits. Work out the equation of the pipe's line, giving your answer in the form y = mx + c.
