- 1.Which of these statements is an equation with exactly one solution?
- 2.A geometric sequence begins 162, 54, 18, 6, ... Work out the next term in the sequence.
- 3.By completing the square, find the turning point of the curve y = x² + 6x + 2.y = x² + 6x + 2
- 4.Which line of algebra shows that the sum of two consecutive odd numbers is always a multiple of 4?
- 5.The table shows some values of f(x): when x = 0, f(x) = 5; when x = 1, f(x) = 8; when x = 2, f(x) = 4; when x = 3, f(x) = 1. Work out the value of f(x − 1) when x = 2.
- 6.The graph of y = f(x) has a minimum turning point at (3, −5), crosses the x-axis at x = 1, and crosses the y-axis at (0, −2). Exactly one of these statements about the graph of y = −f(x + 2) is true. Which statement is true?
- 7.A model rocket's height is given by h = −5t² + 20t, where h is in metres and t is in seconds. A student says the graph of h against t is n-shaped. Which statement gives the correct verdict on the SHAPE and the reason that settles it from the equation?
- 8.A straight line has gradient −3 and passes through the point (0, 1). Work out the value of y when x = 2.
- 9.A straight line passes through the points (2, 5) and (4, 11). Work out the gradient of the line.
- 10.The first five terms of a quadratic sequence are −1, 4, 13, 26, 43. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
- 11.Two numbers have a sum of 50. The larger number is twice the smaller number. Work out the smaller number.
- 12.A company's cost, in £, for producing x items is shown on a graph. The tangent to the curve at x = 50 passes through (30, 400) and (70, 800). Interpret the gradient of this tangent in the context of the company's costs.
- 13.A student is proving that (n + 1)² − n² is always an odd number. Which of these correctly completes the first line of algebra?
- 14.A rule turns each input x into an output y. The inputs are x = 1, 2, 3, 4 and the matching outputs are y = −5, −3, −1 and one missing value. Work out the missing value of y.
- 15.A student attempts to prove that the product of two consecutive integers is always even: (i) Let the two consecutive integers be n and n + 1. (ii) Since n(n + 1) is even, one of n and n + 1 must be an even number. (iii) Therefore, n(n + 1) is even. At which statement does the proof first assume the very fact it is trying to prove?
