- 1.The nth term of a sequence is n² + 2n − 4. Work out the 7th term.
- 2.Subtract, giving your answer as a single fraction in its simplest form: 4/(x − 1) − 2/(x + 3)
- 3.The simultaneous equations kx + 2y = 4 and 3x + y = 5 have no solution. Work out the value of k.
- 4.A water tank empties according to y = −5x + 200, where y is the number of litres left after x minutes. Work out the coordinates of the point where this graph crosses the x-axis.y = -5x + 200
- 5.Solve the inequality x² + 6x + 9 > 0.
- 6.By completing the square, find the turning point of the curve y = x² − 4x + 9.y = x² − 4x + 9
- 7.The graph of y = x² − 5x + 6 crosses the x-axis at two points. By factorising, work out the x-coordinates of these two points.y = x² − 5x + 6
- 8.Work out the values of x and y that satisfy both x + y = 10 and x − y = 4.
- 9.Expand and simplify 2(a + 6) − 2(a − 7)
- 10.Solve x² − 8x + 3 = 0 by completing the square. Give your answers in surd form.
- 11.Six years ago Harry was three times as old as his brother Leo. Harry is now 24 years old. Work out Leo's age now.
- 12.A cinema sells adult tickets for £10 and child tickets for £6. A family group buys 9 tickets in total, spending £74. Work out how many adult tickets were bought.
- 13.f(x) = 2x² + 1 and g(x) = x − 1. Work out fg(x), giving your answer in expanded form.y = 2x² + 1
- 14.A candidate solves the simultaneous equations y = x − 2 and y = x² − 4x + 2 by substitution. They write: "x − 2 = x² − 4x + 2, so x² − 3x + 4 = 0." Which of these is a correct comment on the candidate's working?y = x − 2y = x² − 4x + 2
- 15.Kai writes the expression 8 − 3x + 5x² and says it has three terms. Ryan says it only has two terms because a number on its own is not a term. Work out the correct number of terms in the expression.
