- 1.A point has coordinates (x, y). In which two quadrants is the product x × y positive?
- 2.The nth term of a sequence is n² + 4n. Work out the term number, n, for which the term equals 45.
- 3.A sequence has nth term 3n + 4. Two terms are missing from the list of its first five terms: 7, 10, _, 16, _. Work out the missing 3rd and 5th terms added together.
- 4.The curve y = −x² + 6x − 5 has a maximum point. Use completing the square to find its coordinates.y = −x² + 6x − 5
- 5.f(x) = x² − 1 and g(x) = 3x. Work out fg(4).y = x² − 1
- 6.The curve y = x² − 6 and the line y = 2x − 3 intersect at two points. Which pair of points is correct?y = 2x − 3y = x² − 6
- 7.The first five terms of a sequence are 7, 9, 13, 19, 27. By finding the second difference, work out the coefficient of n² in the nth term.
- 8.A company's weekly profit, in £, is modelled by y = f(x), where x is the number of weeks since launch. The graph of y = f(x) has a maximum at (10, 45000). A rival company uses the same marketing strategy but starts trading 6 weeks later and has fixed costs £8000 higher every week, so its profit is modelled by y = f(x − 6) − 8000. In which week does the rival's maximum weekly profit occur, and what is it?
- 9.By completing the square, show that the curve y = x² − 14x + 50 never crosses the x-axis. Which statement gives the correct reason?y = x² − 14x + 50
- 10.A car park charges a £4 fixed fee plus £3 for each hour. Kofi has exactly £25 to spend on parking. Using the inequality 4 + 3h ≤ 25, work out the greatest number of whole hours, h, he can park for.
- 11.The perimeter, P, of a rectangle with length l and width w is calculated using P = 2l + 2w. What kind of mathematical statement is P = 2l + 2w?
- 12.A line segment has one endpoint at (−6, 2) and its midpoint at (−1, 5). Work out the coordinates of the other endpoint.
- 13.Tom is asked to classify the statement 5(2x − 3) = 10x − 15. Which statement about it is correct?
- 14.A student solves the simultaneous equations 2x + y = 11 and x − y = 1 by elimination, adding the two equations together. Which of these is the correct result of that step?
- 15.Work out the equation of the straight line through the points (−3, 4) and (1, −8).
