- 1.Solve the simultaneous equations 3x + y = 14 and x + y = 6. Work out the value of x.
- 2.A coach company charges a booking fee plus a price for each passenger. A booking for 1 passenger costs £9, for 2 passengers costs £15, for 3 passengers costs £21, and for 4 passengers costs £27. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the cost in pounds of a booking for n passengers.
- 3.A car's speed increases steadily while it accelerates. Its speed v m/s after t seconds is given by v = u + at, where u is the starting speed in m/s and a is the acceleration in m/s². A car starts at u = 4 m/s and accelerates at a = 2 m/s² until it reaches v = 20 m/s. Work out t, the time taken in seconds.
- 4.A car accelerates uniformly from rest at 2.5 m/s² until it reaches a speed of 20 m/s, then travels at this constant speed for a further 30 seconds. Work out the total distance travelled.
- 5.The nth term of a sequence is 2n² + 1. Work out the 4th term of the sequence.
- 6.A circle has centre (0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 100. A straight line is drawn from the origin through the point P(8, 9). Work out whether P lies inside, on, or outside the circle.
- 7.Solve 2x + 7 = x + 13
- 8.The formula for converting a temperature from degrees Celsius, C, to degrees Fahrenheit, F, is F = 1.8C + 32. Work out F when C = 20, and identify what kind of mathematical statement F = 1.8C + 32 is.
- 9.Expand and simplify (x − 3)²
- 10.Two numbers have a sum of 24. Their difference is 6. Work out the two numbers.
- 11.Which of these statements is an identity?
- 12.The perimeter of a rectangle is given by the formula P = 2(l + w), where l is the length and w is the width. A rectangular garden has a perimeter of 46 m and a length of 14 m. Rearrange the formula to make w the subject, then work out the width of the garden.
- 13.By completing the square, find the turning point of the curve y = x² − 4x + 9.y = x² − 4x + 9
- 14.Write down the expression that means the same as (x + 7) ÷ 4.
- 15.A ramp rises 3 m over a horizontal distance of 12 m. Work out the gradient of the ramp.
