- 1.The table shows the height, in metres, of a firework rocket at various times, in seconds, during its flight: 40 at t = 2, 54 at t = 3, and 60 at t = 4. Use the chord between t = 2 and t = 4 to estimate the gradient of the height-time graph at t = 3, stating the correct units.
- 2.Work out the maximum value of y = sin x, and the smallest positive value of x, in degrees, at which it occurs.y = sin(x)
- 3.The area of a circle is given by the formula A = πr², where r is the radius. Rearrange the formula to make r the subject.
- 4.A student attempts to prove that the product of two consecutive integers is always even: (i) Let the two consecutive integers be n and n + 1. (ii) Since n(n + 1) is even, one of n and n + 1 must be an even number. (iii) Therefore, n(n + 1) is even. At which statement does the proof first assume the very fact it is trying to prove?
- 5.Subtract, giving your answer as a single fraction in its simplest form: 4/(x − 1) − 2/(x + 3)
- 6.To rearrange the formula y = 3x − 8 to make x the subject, Priya writes: 'Add 8 to both sides to get y + 8 = 3x, then divide both sides by 3 to get x = y + 8 ÷ 3.' Work out the correct expression for x.y = 3x − 8
- 7.A fundraising chain letter starts with 3 people taking part in round 1. Each following round has 4 times as many people taking part as the round before. Work out the number of people taking part in round 4.
- 8.A triangle has vertices at (1, 1), (1, 5) and (6, 1). Work out the area of the triangle.
- 9.Expand and simplify (x + 1)(x + 2)(x + 3).
- 10.The trapezium rule is used to estimate the area under a curve between x = 2 and x = 6. The curve is concave up (it curves upwards, like the inside of a bowl) throughout this interval. Which statement about the estimate is correct?
- 11.Three consecutive integers add up to 72. Using n for the smallest integer, form an equation and solve it to find the smallest of the three integers.
- 12.The tangent to a curve at the point (5, 2) is the line y = mx + c. This tangent crosses the y-axis at (0, −8). Work out the gradient, m, of the tangent.
- 13.An arithmetic sequence has first term 40 and common difference −6. Work out the 9th term of the sequence.
- 14.A ball's height, h metres, t seconds after being thrown follows h = (t − 1)(9 − t). Given that the ball is at ground level at t = 1 and t = 9, work out at what time t the ball reaches its maximum height, using symmetry.
- 15.The first five terms of a quadratic sequence are 4, 7, 12, 19, 28. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
