- 1.Work out the value of m² + 3m when m = −2
- 2.A straight line has equation y = 4 − 3x. Work out the gradient of the line.
- 3.f(x) = 2x − 1. Work out ff(x).y = 2x − 1
- 4.A candidate solves the simultaneous equations y = x − 2 and y = x² − 4x + 2 by substitution. They write: "x − 2 = x² − 4x + 2, so x² − 3x + 4 = 0." Which of these is a correct comment on the candidate's working?y = x − 2y = x² − 4x + 2
- 5.A bacteria colony doubles every 4 hours and its size is recorded only every 4 hours. The recorded population 20 hours after the start is 9,600. After how many hours did the recorded population first exceed 1,000?
- 6.The table shows some values of f(x): when x = 0, f(x) = 5; when x = 1, f(x) = 8; when x = 2, f(x) = 4; when x = 3, f(x) = 1. Work out the value of f(x − 1) when x = 2.
- 7.Work out the period of the graph of y = cos x, in degrees.y = cos(x)
- 8.Simplify fully: (x + 2)/(3x) × 6x²/(x² − 4)
- 9.The graph of y = f(x) has a minimum turning point at (4, −5). The graph of y = f(x) + a has a minimum turning point whose minimum VALUE is 2. Work out the value of a, and state the coordinates of the minimum turning point of y = f(x) + a.
- 10.A rule turns each input x into an output y. An input of 1 gives an output of 1, an input of 2 gives an output of 4 and an input of 3 gives an output of 9. Work out the rule.
- 11.A plumber charges a call-out fee plus an hourly rate for a job. The total cost, £C, for a job lasting h hours is given by the formula C = 40 + 25h. What does the number 40 represent in this formula?
- 12.A graph passes through the point (0, 1). As x increases through positive values, the graph rises more and more steeply, and as x decreases through negative values, the graph gets closer and closer to the x-axis without ever reaching it. Which of these could be the equation of the graph?
- 13.The first four terms of a sequence are 4, 9, 14, 19. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
- 14.The point (−4, 3) lies on the circle x² + y² = 25, which has centre (0, 0). Work out the equation of the tangent to the circle at (−4, 3), giving your answer in the form y = mx + c.
- 15.A company's profit is £500 in its first year. Each year after that, the profit is £300 more than the year before. Work out the profit in the company's 6th year.
