- 1.Solve (3x + 2)/5 = (x + 4)/3
- 2.A hall is set out in rows of chairs for an assembly. Row 1 has 50 chairs, row 2 has 45 chairs, row 3 has 40 chairs, and row 4 has 35 chairs, with each row after the first having 5 fewer chairs than the one before. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the number of chairs in row n.
- 3.A triangle has vertices at (1, 1), (1, 5) and (6, 1). Work out the area of the triangle.
- 4.A circle has equation x² + y² = 25. Does the point (3, 4) lie on this circle?
- 5.A quadratic graph has equation y = (x − 4)². A student says this graph crosses the x-axis at two different points. Explain why the student is wrong.
- 6.Solve the simultaneous equations 2x + y = 7 and x + 2y = 8.
- 7.A student is proving that (n + 1)² − n² is always an odd number. Which of these correctly completes the first line of algebra?
- 8.A parcel delivery company's cost graph shows the following: the cost is a flat £5 for parcels weighing up to 2 kg, and then rises by £2 for each additional kg above 2 kg. Use the graph to work out the weight of a parcel that costs £17.
- 9.A rule turns each input x into an output y. An input of 1 gives an output of 1, an input of 2 gives an output of 4 and an input of 3 gives an output of 9. Work out the rule.
- 10.Which of these equations represents the graph of y = 2ˣ translated by 3 units in the positive y-direction?
- 11.The trapezium rule is used to estimate the area under a curve between x = 2 and x = 6. The curve is concave up (it curves upwards, like the inside of a bowl) throughout this interval. Which statement about the estimate is correct?
- 12.Make x the subject of the formula y = (x − 4)/5.
- 13.Line P has equation y = −2x + 5 and line Q has equation 2y = x + 6. Are lines P and Q perpendicular to each other?y = -2x + 5y = x + 6
- 14.A theatre has rows of seats arranged so that row 1 has 12 seats, row 2 has 17 seats, row 3 has 22 seats and row 4 has 27 seats, with each row having 5 more seats than the row before. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the number of seats in row n.
- 15.Solve the simultaneous equations 3x + y = 14 and x + y = 6. Work out the value of x.
