- 1.A number machine multiplies its input by 2 and then subtracts 5. Work out the output when the input is 6.
- 2.Solve 4x − (2x − 6) = 18
- 3.A fundraising chain letter starts with 3 people taking part in round 1. Each following round has 4 times as many people taking part as the round before. Work out the number of people taking part in round 4.
- 4.The graph of y = mx + 6 passes through the point (−2, 0). Work out the value of m.
- 5.A sequence begins at 50, and each term after that is found by subtracting 8 from the term before it. Priya says the 8th term of the sequence is negative. Is Priya correct?
- 6.Work out the period of the graph of y = cos x, in degrees.y = cos(x)
- 7.The simple interest, £I, earned on a savings account is given by the formula I = PRT/100, where P is the amount invested in pounds, R is the interest rate per year and T is the time in years. Rearrange the formula to make P the subject.
- 8.The first five terms of a quadratic sequence are 4, 7, 12, 19, 28. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the nth term.
- 9.Work out the value of m² + 3m when m = −2
- 10.A cyclist's speed rises from rest to a maximum — quickly at first, then more and more slowly — so her speed-time graph is a curve that is concave down (its gradient decreases as time goes on). A trapezium estimate is made for the distance travelled during this phase, using two points on the curve. Is the trapezium estimate an overestimate or an underestimate of the true distance, and why?
- 11.A company charges for hiring chairs for a day. Hiring 1 chair costs £12, hiring 2 chairs costs £19, hiring 3 chairs costs £26, and hiring 4 chairs costs £33. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the cost in pounds of hiring n chairs for a day.
- 12.Work out the value of 2x² when x = −3
- 13.The graph of y = sin x is transformed onto the graph of y = sin x + 1. Which statement correctly describes the transformation and the new range of the graph?y = sin(x)
- 14.Solve x² − 2x − 24 = 0.
- 15.Line L has equation y = 3x − 2. Work out the gradient of a line perpendicular to L.y = 3x − 2
