- 1.Solve the inequality x² ≥ 16, giving your answer using set notation.
- 2.A bath is filled with water; the graph of volume (litres) against time (minutes) is a curve, since the flow rate changes. The tangent to the curve at t = 10 minutes passes through the points (8, 130) and (12, 190), and the volume in the bath at t = 10 minutes is 160 litres. Use the gradient of this tangent to estimate the volume in the bath 5 minutes after t = 10 minutes.
- 3.The area under a speed-time graph between t = 0 and t = 6 seconds is estimated using three strips of equal width, using the speeds, in m/s, at t = 0, 2, 4 and 6: 0, 5, 9 and 12. Using the trapezium rule with these three trapezia, estimate the distance travelled.
- 4.A quadratic graph has roots at x = −3 and x = 5, and it crosses the y-axis at (0, −15). Work out the equation of the curve in the form y = (x − a)(x − b).
- 5.A car is decelerating. The tangent to its velocity-time graph at t = 12 seconds passes through the points (8, 22) and (16, 6), where velocity is in m/s and time is in seconds. Work out the gradient of this tangent, in m/s².
- 6.The 2nd term of a geometric sequence is 6 and the 4th term is 24. Given that all the terms of the sequence are positive, work out the common ratio.
- 7.The point A(−6, 8) lies on the circle x² + y² = 100, whose centre is the origin O. The tangent to the circle at A crosses the y-axis at the point B. Work out the length of OB.
- 8.x = 5. Work out the value of 3x² − 4.
- 9.The solution set of an inequality is described as: x is less than −3, or x is greater than or equal to 1. Write this solution set using set notation.
- 10.Solve the simultaneous equations 2x + y = 7 and x + 2y = 8.
- 11.The equation x² − 4x + k = 0 has two different real solutions. Work out the range of values of k.
- 12.A table of values is being drawn for the graph of y = x³. Work out the value of y when x = −2.y = x
- 13.Which expression means 'add 3 to n, then multiply the result by 4'?
- 14.Solve the simultaneous equations x + y = 1 and 2x + y = 5.
- 15.Which line of algebra shows that the sum of two consecutive odd numbers is always a multiple of 4?
