- 1.A fundraising chain letter starts with 3 people taking part in round 1. Each following round has 4 times as many people taking part as the round before. Work out the number of people taking part in round 4.
- 2.For the equation 2x + 3 = 11, and the inequality 2x + 3 > 11, which statement correctly compares their solutions?
- 3.The graph of y = sin x is reflected in the x-axis to give the graph of y = g(x). Work out the value of g(90), where x is measured in degrees.y = sin(x)
- 4.A candle is 30 cm tall and burns down at a steady rate of 1 cm per hour. Write down the function for the height of the candle y, in centimetres, after x hours.
- 5.The point (5, −12) lies on the circle x² + y² = 169, which has centre (0, 0). Work out the equation of the tangent to the circle at (5, −12), giving your answer in the form y = mx + c.
- 6.A sequence has the position-to-term rule n² + 2, where n is the position number. Work out the 6th term.
- 7.Work out the values of x and y that satisfy both x + y = 10 and x − y = 4.
- 8.A sequence has the position-to-term rule n² − 3, where n is the position number. Work out the difference between the 6th term and the 5th term.
- 9.Subtract, giving your answer as a single fraction in its simplest form: 4/(x − 1) − 2/(x + 3)
- 10.The diagram shows a distance–time graph for a cyclist travelling at a constant speed, for the first 6 minutes of a journey. Distance is in kilometres and time is in minutes. Work out how far the cyclist would travel in 20 minutes at the same speed.
- 11.By completing the square, find the turning point of the curve y = x² + 6x + 2.y = x² + 6x + 2
- 12.The line y = 3x + 6 meets the x-axis at one point. Work out the coordinates of that point.y = 3x + 6
- 13.Simplify (5x² + 3x − 2) − (2x² − x + 5)
- 14.A straight line has gradient −2 and passes through the point (3, 1). Work out the equation of the line.
- 15.A population of bacteria doubles every 3 hours. It starts at 800. Work out the population after 9 hours.
