- 1.Solve 2x² − 32 = 0.
- 2.The point (5, −12) lies on the circle x² + y² = 169, which has centre (0, 0). Work out the equation of the tangent to the circle at (5, −12), giving your answer in the form y = mx + c.
- 3.A cinema sells adult tickets for £10 and child tickets for £6. A family group buys 9 tickets in total, spending £74. Work out how many adult tickets were bought.
- 4.A gardener charges a fixed fee of £15 plus £8 for each hour worked. The total charge, £T, for a job lasting h hours is given by T = 15 + 8h. Work out the charge for a job lasting 4 hours, and identify what kind of statement T = 15 + 8h is.
- 5.A ball is dropped and bounces. The height of each bounce after the first is 8 cm less than the bounce before it. The first bounce reaches 60 cm. Work out the height of the 5th bounce.
- 6.The first four terms of a sequence are 2, 6, 10, 14. Priya says the nth term is 4n. Work out the correct expression for the nth term.
- 7.Six years ago Harry was three times as old as his brother Leo. Harry is now 24 years old. Work out Leo's age now.
- 8.A straight line passes through the points (2, 5) and (4, 11). Work out the gradient of the line.
- 9.The graph of y = f(x) has a minimum turning point at (4, −5). The graph of y = f(x) + a has a minimum turning point whose minimum VALUE is 2. Work out the value of a, and state the coordinates of the minimum turning point of y = f(x) + a.
- 10.A circle has centre O(0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 169. The point Q has coordinates (10, 11). Work out which of these gives the correct position of Q together with correct working.
- 11.The nth term of a sequence is n² + 2n − 4. Work out the 7th term.
- 12.A straight line has gradient 3 and passes through the point (1, 4). Work out the equation of the line.
- 13.A ramp rises 3 m over a horizontal distance of 12 m. Work out the gradient of the ramp.
- 14.A charity's fundraising total, T pounds, over d days follows T = (d − 3)(30 − d) for 3 ≤ d ≤ 30, where T = 0 marks the start and end of the campaign. Work out how many days the campaign runs for, from start to end.
- 15.A cup of tea cools after being made. Its temperature-time graph is a curve. Three tangents are drawn on the graph: at t = 2 minutes the tangent has gradient −8; at t = 10 minutes the tangent has gradient −3; at t = 20 minutes the tangent has gradient −0.5. Which of these statements about the tea's cooling is correct?
