- 1.x = 5. Work out the value of 3x² − 4.
- 2.Simplify (x² − 9) ÷ (x² + 5x + 6).
- 3.The diagram shows a distance–time graph for a cyclist travelling at a constant speed, for the first 6 minutes of a journey. Distance is in kilometres and time is in minutes. Work out how far the cyclist would travel in 20 minutes at the same speed.
- 4.Solve the simultaneous equations x + y = 1 and 2x + y = 5.
- 5.Work out the values of x and y that satisfy both x + y = 10 and x − y = 4.
- 6.The formula connecting speed, distance and time is v = s ÷ t. Work out v, in km/h, when s = 180 and t = 4.
- 7.The curve y = x² − 6 and the line y = 2x − 3 intersect at two points. Which pair of points is correct?y = 2x − 3y = x² − 6
- 8.A sequence begins at 60, and each term after that is found by subtracting 7 from the term before it. Work out the 5th term of the sequence.
- 9.The simultaneous equations 2x + 3y = 12 and x − y = 1 are given. Work out the value of y.
- 10.A circular pond has equation x² + y² = 20, with lengths in metres from the centre of the garden. A straight path runs along the line y = 2x, entering the pond and leaving it again. Work out the coordinates of the two points where the path meets the edge of the pond.y = 2x
- 11.A zip-line runs from a platform 25 m high to a landing point 5 m high, over a horizontal distance of 40 m. Work out the gradient of the zip-line.
- 12.A cyclist's distance-time graph shows the following: she travels 12 km in the first 30 minutes at a steady speed, then rests for 30 minutes, then travels a further 8 km in the next 15 minutes. Work out her average speed, in km/h, for the whole journey.
- 13.A straight line has equation 4y = 12x + 20. Work out the gradient of the line.y = 12x + 20
- 14.Two brothers have ages that add up to 30. The elder brother is 6 years older than the younger brother. Work out the age of the younger brother.
- 15.The nth term of a sequence is 2n² + 1. Work out the 4th term of the sequence.
