- 1.A point has coordinates (x, y), where x + y = 0 and x is not 0. In which two quadrants could this point lie?
- 2.The point (5, −12) lies on the circle x² + y² = 169, which has centre (0, 0). Work out the equation of the tangent to the circle at (5, −12), giving your answer in the form y = mx + c.
- 3.There are 50 adults on a coach to the Lake District. Every adult is either a man or a woman. There are 10 more men than women. Work out the number of men.
- 4.The line y = 3x + 6 meets the x-axis at one point. Work out the coordinates of that point.y = 3x + 6
- 5.A circle has centre (0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 50. Work out the radius of the circle, giving your answer as a surd in its simplest form.
- 6.A market trader builds a display of oranges in a rectangular block. The block is n oranges wide and 4 oranges longer than it is wide. The number of oranges needed is 5 when n = 1, 12 when n = 2, 21 when n = 3, 32 when n = 4, and 45 when n = 5. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the number of oranges needed for a display of width n.
- 7.f(x) = 2x + 1. Work out the value of x for which f⁻¹(x) = 5.y = 2x + 1
- 8.Solve x² + 7x = 0.
- 9.A colony of bacteria doubles in number every hour. At 9am there are 5 bacteria in the colony. Work out how many bacteria there will be at 12 noon.
- 10.The curve y = x² − 3x. Use the chord between x = 1 and x = 4 to estimate the gradient of the curve at x = 2.5.y = x² − 3x
- 11.The point (6, 8) lies on the circle x² + y² = 100. Work out the gradient of the tangent to the circle at (6, 8).
- 12.The nth term of a sequence is 2n² + 1. Work out the 4th term of the sequence.
- 13.A student solves the simultaneous equations 2x + y = 11 and x − y = 1 by elimination, adding the two equations together. Which of these is the correct result of that step?
- 14.A phone plan costs a fixed £15 per month plus 8p per minute of calls. In one month, Jamal's bill was £23.80. Form an equation using m for the number of minutes, and solve it to find how many minutes Jamal used that month.
- 15.f(x) = x + 3 and g(x) = 2x. Work out fg(x).y = x + 3
