- 1.A ball's height, h metres, t seconds after being thrown follows h = (t − 1)(9 − t). Given that the ball is at ground level at t = 1 and t = 9, work out at what time t the ball reaches its maximum height, using symmetry.
- 2.The graph of y = x³ − 5x is reflected in the y-axis. Work out the equation of the image.y = x
- 3.A circle has centre (0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 36. Work out the coordinates of the two points where the circle crosses the y-axis.
- 4.The point A(−6, 8) lies on the circle x² + y² = 100, whose centre is the origin O. The tangent to the circle at A crosses the y-axis at the point B. Work out the length of OB.
- 5.Simplify 5a/6 − a/3
- 6.A zip-line runs from a platform 25 m high to a landing point 5 m high, over a horizontal distance of 40 m. Work out the gradient of the zip-line.
- 7.Make x the subject of the formula y = 5x + 3.y = 5x + 3
- 8.Work out the value of 3x² − 4x when x = −2.
- 9.A student claims: 'For every positive integer n, n² + n + 1 is a prime number.' Which value of n shows that this claim is false?
- 10.Which of these equations is equivalent to 5x − 2 = 3x + 8?
- 11.A rectangular lawn is 4 m longer than it is wide. Its area is 96 m². Work out the length of the lawn.
- 12.The 2nd term of a geometric sequence is 6 and the 4th term is 24. Given that all the terms of the sequence are positive, work out the common ratio.
- 13.Points A(−1, 2) and B(5, 8) are the endpoints of a line segment. Work out the equation of the perpendicular bisector of AB.
- 14.A taxi fare, in pounds, for a journey of m miles is given by the formula F = 3 + 2.5m. A journey costs £15.50. Work out the distance travelled, m, by first rearranging the formula to make m the subject, then substituting F = 15.50.
