- 1.The mean of four numbers is 12.5. Three of the numbers are 8, 15 and 19. Form an equation using n for the fourth number, and solve it to find n.
- 2.The perimeter, P, of a rectangle with length l and width w is calculated using P = 2l + 2w. What kind of mathematical statement is P = 2l + 2w?
- 3.Four sequences are shown below. Sequence P: 3, 6, 12, 24, … Sequence Q: 1, 4, 9, 16, … Sequence R: 2, 4, 8, 14, … Sequence S: 5, 10, 15, 20, … Work out which of the sequences P, Q, R and S is geometric.
- 4.The nth term of a geometric sequence is given by aₙ = 3 × 2ⁿ⁻¹. Work out the position of the first term that is greater than 1,000.
- 5.Make x the subject of the formula y = 4x − 3.y = 4x − 3
- 6.A car's velocity–time graph is a straight line from (0 s, 4 m/s) rising to (6 s, V m/s), followed by a straight line falling from (6 s, V m/s) to (9 s, 0 m/s). The gradient of the second line is −8 m/s². Work out the total distance travelled between t = 0 and t = 9 seconds.
- 7.A sequence has the position-to-term rule n² + 1, where n is the position number. Work out how much bigger the 5th term is than the 4th term.
- 8.The simple interest, £I, earned on a savings account is given by the formula I = PRT/100, where P is the amount invested in pounds, R is the interest rate per year and T is the time in years. Rearrange the formula to make P the subject.
- 9.A water butt holds 200 litres and is being drained at a steady 8 litres per minute. Write down the function for the amount of water y, in litres, left after x minutes.
- 10.A region R satisfies y ≤ x + 1, x + y ≤ 5 and y ≥ 0. Which of these correctly describes R in words?
- 11.A ribbon of length L metres is cut into 5 equal pieces, and then 3 metres is removed from one piece. Write down an expression, in metres, for the length of that piece after 3 metres is removed.
- 12.A straight line has gradient 3 and passes through the point (1, 4). Work out the equation of the line.
