- 1.(2x + 3)(x + a) ≡ 2x² + 11x + 12 is an identity. Work out the value of a.
- 2.The nth term of a sequence is n² + 2n − 4. Work out the 7th term.
- 3.Simplify 2/(x + 1) + 3/(x − 2), giving your answer as a single fraction.
- 4.A plumber charges a £40 call-out fee plus £25 for each hour worked. The total charge, £C, for a job lasting h hours is given by C = 40 + 25h. Work out the charge for a job lasting 3 hours, and name what kind of statement C = 40 + 25h is.
- 5.Work out the equation of the straight line that passes through (−2, 3) and (4, −9).
- 6.Line L has equation y = 2x + 3. Work out the equation of the line perpendicular to L that passes through the point (4, 1), giving your answer in the form x + 2y = c.y = 2x + 3
- 7.By completing the square, find the turning point of the curve y = 2x² − 8x + 3.y = 2x² − 8x + 3
- 8.Work out the period of the graph of y = cos x, in degrees.y = cos(x)
- 9.A car is decelerating. The tangent to its velocity-time graph at t = 12 seconds passes through the points (8, 22) and (16, 6), where velocity is in m/s and time is in seconds. Work out the gradient of this tangent, in m/s².
- 10.Yusuf has £40 saved and adds £6 each week. His sister Aisha has £10 saved and adds £11 each week. After how many weeks will they have saved the same amount?
- 11.The graph of y = x² − 4x is translated by the vector (3, 0). Work out the equation of the image, giving your answer in the form y = x² + bx + c.y = x² − 4xy = x²
- 12.A straight line has gradient −3 and passes through the point (0, 1). Work out the value of y when x = 2.
- 13.The curve y = 2x² − 12x + 7 has a minimum point. By completing the square, find the value of x at which the minimum occurs.y = 2x² − 12x + 7
- 14.A cyclist's speed rises from rest to a maximum — quickly at first, then more and more slowly — so her speed-time graph is a curve that is concave down (its gradient decreases as time goes on). A trapezium estimate is made for the distance travelled during this phase, using two points on the curve. Is the trapezium estimate an overestimate or an underestimate of the true distance, and why?
- 15.The table shows some values of f(x): when x = 0, f(x) = 5; when x = 1, f(x) = 8; when x = 2, f(x) = 4; when x = 3, f(x) = 1. Work out the value of f(x − 1) when x = 2.
