- 1.A garden path runs along the line 4x + y = 12. A drainage pipe must be laid perpendicular to the path, passing through the point (3, 1) where a sprinkler sits. Work out the equation of the pipe's line, giving your answer in the form y = mx + c.
- 2.A phone company works out a monthly bill, £B, using the formula B = 18 + 0.05t, where £18 is the fixed monthly charge and t is the number of extra text messages sent beyond the free allowance, each charged at 5p. Farida's bill for one month is £24.50. Work out the number of extra text messages, t, she sent.
- 3.A curve has equation y = x² − 9. Which statement about its graph is correct?y = x² − 9
- 4.A circle has centre (0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 25. Work out the x-coordinates of the two points where the circle crosses the line y = 3.
- 5.Expand and simplify (x − 3)²
- 6.Solve x² + 3x − 10 = 0.
- 7.A cycle route is 84 km long. Freya sets off along it at a steady 14 km/h. Write down the function for the distance y, in kilometres, that is still to be cycled after x hours.
- 8.The graph of y = cos x is transformed onto the graph of y = cos(x − 90°). State the direction of the translation and which standard graph the image is.y = cos(x)
- 9.Harry will spend at most £150 on a party. The cake costs £60 and each helium balloon costs £3. Solve an inequality to find all the possible numbers of balloons, x, that he can buy.
- 10.The graph of y = x² − 5x + 6 crosses the x-axis at two points. By factorising, work out the x-coordinates of these two points.y = x² − 5x + 6
- 11.Explain why the equation 4x + 3 = 4x + 10 has no solution for x.
- 12.Make x the subject of the formula y = x/2 − 5.y = x
- 13.The graph of y = f(x) has a minimum turning point at (2, −3). The graph of y = −f(x) + a has a maximum turning point at (2, 9). Work out the value of a.
- 14.Work out the smallest positive value of x, in degrees, for which y = tan x is undefined.y = tan(x)
