- 1.A straight line has equation 4y = 12x + 20. Work out the gradient of the line.y = 12x + 20
- 2.Look at the statement 2x + 5 = 17. Considering whether it is an expression, an equation, a formula, or an identity, which classification is correct?
- 3.The graph of y = x² − 5x + 6 crosses the x-axis at two points. By factorising, work out the x-coordinates of these two points.y = x² − 5x + 6
- 4.Which expression is equivalent to 3(x + 4) − 2(x − 1)?
- 5.Solve x² − 5x + 6 = 0 by factorising.
- 6.Which of these equations represents the graph of y = 2ˣ translated by 3 units in the positive y-direction?
- 7.Three consecutive integers add up to 72. Using n for the smallest integer, form an equation and solve it to find the smallest of the three integers.
- 8.The 2nd term of a geometric sequence is 6 and the 4th term is 24. Given that all the terms of the sequence are positive, work out the common ratio.
- 9.A circle has centre (0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 36. Work out the coordinates of the two points where the circle crosses the y-axis.
- 10.Write down the expression that means the same as 'subtract 5 from n, then divide the result by 2'.
- 11.A straight line has gradient −2 and passes through the point (3, 1). Work out the equation of the line.
- 12.A geometric sequence has first term 4 and common ratio √2. Work out the sum of the first three terms of the sequence, giving your answer in the form a + b√2.
- 13.A market trader builds a display of oranges in a rectangular block. The block is n oranges wide and 4 oranges longer than it is wide. The number of oranges needed is 5 when n = 1, 12 when n = 2, 21 when n = 3, 32 when n = 4, and 45 when n = 5. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the number of oranges needed for a display of width n.
- 14.A bacteria colony doubles every 4 hours and its size is recorded only every 4 hours. The recorded population 20 hours after the start is 9,600. After how many hours did the recorded population first exceed 1,000?
- 15.The nth term of a sequence is n² − 2n + 5. Work out the 10th term.
