- (b) −2 — The gradient of the original line is (6 − 2) ÷ (3 − 1) = 4 ÷ 2 = 2. Reflecting in the x-axis sends every y-coordinate to its negative, which flips the sign of the gradient: the image line has gradient −2. Translating by (2, 0) is a horizontal shift, which does not change the line's steepness or direction at all, so the gradient stays at −2. Assuming the gradient is unaffected by the reflection gives 2, the original gradient carried straight through. Thinking a reflection in the x-axis turns a gradient into its positive reciprocal gives 1/2. Combining that same wrong idea with the sign flip from the reflection gives −1/2. Only the sign flips, from the reflection, and translating never changes a gradient at all, so the answer is −2.
- (c) 450 m — To convert km to m, multiply by 1000: 0.45 × 1000 = 450 m. Multiplying by 100 instead of 1000 gives 45 m. Multiplying by 10 000 instead of 1000 gives 4500 m. Not converting at all, just relabelling the number, gives 0.45 m.
- (d) 82.8° — Method: angle ABC is opposite the given side AC, so rearrange the cosine rule to cos B = (AB² + BC² − AC²) / (2 × AB × BC). Working: cos B = (3.5² + 2.8² − 4.2²) / (2 × 3.5 × 2.8), so angle ABC = 82.8°. Forgetting the negative sign in the rearrangement gives the supplementary angle 97.2°; leaving out the factor of 2 in the denominator gives 75.5°; and using AB and AC (the pair either side of angle A, not angle B) gives 41.4°, which is angle BAC, not angle ABC. Always check which angle sits opposite the side you left out of the pair you are dividing by.
- (a) 35.9 cm² — Method: the area of any triangle is 1/2 × a × b × sin C, where a and b are two sides and C is the angle between them. Working: the 47° angle lies between AB = 8.6 cm and AC = 11.4 cm, so the area is 1/2 × 8.6 × 11.4 × sin 47° = 49.02 × 0.73135 = 35.851. Answer: the area is 35.9 cm² to 1 decimal place. The distractors: 71.7 cm² comes from leaving out the factor 1/2 and working out 8.6 × 11.4 × sin 47°; 33.4 cm² comes from pressing cos instead of sin, 49.02 × cos 47°, which is the same as using the complement 43° in place of 47°; 52.6 cm² comes from pressing tan instead of sin, 49.02 × tan 47°.
- (b) £2.94 — Method: the price is quoted for each kilogram, so the mass has to be written in kilograms before it is multiplied by the price. Working: 1 kg = 1000 g, so 350 ÷ 1000 = 0.35 and the piece weighs 0.35 kg. The cost is then 8.40 × 0.35 = 2.94. Answer: £2.94. Treating 350 g as 3.5 kg, a division by 100 rather than by 1000, gives 8.40 × 3.5 = 29.40. Multiplying the price by the number of grams gives 8.40 × 350 = 2940. Dividing the price by the mass instead of multiplying gives 8.40 ÷ 0.35 = 24.
- (b) x = 5 — Every point on a vertical line has the same x-coordinate, so the equation of a vertical line through (5, 2) is x = 5. "y = 5" mixes up the coordinates, using the x-value of 5 to write a y-equation. "y = 2" is the equation of the horizontal line through (5, 2), not the vertical one. "x = 2" uses the correct letter but the wrong coordinate, the y-value of 2 instead of the x-value of 5.
- (d) 6.7 cm — Volume of the sphere = (4/3)πr³ = (4/3) × 3.14 × 5³ = (4/3) × 3.14 × 125 = 523.33 cm³. Set this equal to the cylinder's volume πr²h: 523.33 = 3.14 × 25 × h = 78.5h. Divide: h = 523.33 ÷ 78.5 = 6.667 cm, which rounds to 6.7 cm. 1.7 cm comes from using the sphere's diameter, 10 cm, as the cylinder's radius: 523.33 ÷ (3.14 × 10²) = 1.7 cm.
- (d) No transformation — every point stays exactly where it was — The two vectors (5, −3) and (−5, 3) are opposites, so adding them gives (0, 0): every point ends up exactly where it started, and there is no transformation at all. Misreading the second vector's signs and effectively adding (5, −3) to itself instead of to its opposite gives a translation by the vector (10, −6). Assuming two translations must combine into a reflection gives a reflection in the x-axis — but a reflection reverses orientation, and translations never do. Assuming that two opposite vectors must mean a half turn gives a rotation of 180° about the origin — but a 180° rotation moves every point except its own centre, whereas this pair of translations leaves every single point exactly where it was. Two translations by opposite vectors always cancel exactly, leaving every point unmoved.
- (b) 4 : 9 — The heights are in the ratio 4 : 6, which simplifies to 2 : 3. For similar solids, area scales with the square of the length ratio, so the surface area ratio is 2² : 3² = 4 : 9. 2 : 3 is just the simplified length ratio, before squaring has been done. 8 : 27 comes from cubing the ratio (2³ : 3³) instead of squaring it — that's the rule for volumes, not areas. 9 : 4 has the correct squared values but in the wrong order, giving the larger tin's area first instead of the smaller.
- (c) 151,200 cm² — First find the area in m²: 4.2 × 3.6 = 15.12 m². To convert m² to cm², multiply by 10,000, since 1 m² = 100 cm × 100 cm = 10,000 cm²: 15.12 × 10,000 = 151,200 cm². 15.12 cm² gives the area in m² without converting the units at all. 1,512 cm² multiplies by 100 instead of 10,000, treating the conversion as if it were for a single length rather than an area. 15,120 cm² multiplies by 1,000 instead of 10,000.
- (c) 22.3 km — The bearing of E from D is 065°, so the bearing of D from E (the back bearing) is 065° + 180° = 245°. The bearing of F from E is 165°, so the angle at E between ED and EF is 245° − 165° = 80°. Using the cosine rule, DF² = DE² + EF² − 2 × DE × EF × cos(80°) = 14² + 20² − 2 × 14 × 20 × cos(80°) = 196 + 400 − 560 × cos(80°). Since cos(80°) ≈ 0.17365, 560 × cos(80°) ≈ 97.24, so DF² ≈ 596 − 97.24 = 498.76. Taking the square root, DF ≈ 22.333, which rounds to 22.3 km. 26.3 km comes from using 100° as the angle at E — the difference between the two given bearings taken directly (165° − 65°) without converting to the back bearing first. 498.8 km is DF² itself, rounded, with the square root never taken. 23.4 km comes from leaving out the factor of 2 in the cosine rule formula, computing DF² = 196 + 400 − 14 × 20 × cos(80°) ≈ 547.38 instead.
- (c) 1.5 — The area scale factor is the length scale factor squared, so if n is the length factor, n² = 2.25. Taking the positive square root gives n = 1.5 (check: 1.5² = 2.25). 2.25 is just the area factor restated, with no root taken. 1.125 comes from halving 2.25 instead of taking its square root. 5.0625 comes from squaring 2.25 instead of rooting it.
- (a) 113.04 cm³ — Method: the volume of a sphere is (4 ÷ 3) × π × r³. Cube the radius, multiply by π, then multiply by 4 and divide by 3. Working: r³ = 3³ = 27, then 3.14 × 27 = 84.78, then 84.78 × 4 = 339.12 and 339.12 ÷ 3 = 113.04. Answer: 113.04 cm³. The distractors: 84.78 cm³ comes from stopping at πr³ and leaving out the four thirds; 37.68 cm³ comes from squaring the radius instead of cubing it, (4 ÷ 3) × 3.14 × 9; 28.26 cm³ comes from using πr², the area of a circle, and labelling it as a volume.
- (d) sector — The region enclosed by two radii and the arc between them is called a sector. A segment is a different region, enclosed by a CHORD and an arc — it does not touch the centre at all. A chord is a straight line, not a region, so it cannot be the answer to a question asking for a region. A semicircle is only correct when the angle between the two radii is exactly 180°, which is not stated here, so it is too specific to be the general answer.
- (b) 113.04 cm² — Sector area is (angle ÷ 360) × π × radius², and radius means the RADIUS, not the diameter: here the diameter is 24 cm, so the radius is 12 cm. The fraction is 90 ÷ 360 = 1/4, and 12² = 144, so the area is 0.25 × 3.14 × 144 = 113.04 cm². Using the diameter itself as if it were the radius gives 0.25 × 3.14 × 576 = 452.16 cm². Using the arc-length formula, 2 × π × radius, instead of the area formula gives 0.25 × 2 × 3.14 × 12 = 18.84 cm². Using the radius instead of its square gives 0.25 × 3.14 × 12 = 9.42 cm².
