Answer key
- (b) (3, −5) — Method: apply the rotation to the point first, then translate the image, in the order the question gives them. Working: rotating (4, 1) by 90° clockwise about the origin sends (x, y) to (y, −x), so (4, 1) becomes (1, −4). Translating (1, −4) by the vector (2, −1) gives 1 + 2 = 3 and −4 − 1 = −5, so the final image is (3, −5). Answer: (3, −5). Use the CLOCKWISE rule, (x, y) → (y, −x), not the anticlockwise one, and apply the rotation before the translation, exactly as the question states them: reversing the order or the direction of turn both land on a different point.
- (d) £50 — Area = 1/2 × (3.5 + 6.5) × 4 = 1/2 × 10 × 4 = 20 m². Cost = 20 × £2.50 = £50. (£100 comes from forgetting to halve the trapezium area, giving 40 m² instead of 20 m²; £65 comes from using only the longer parallel side, 6.5 × 4 = 26 m², instead of the trapezium formula; £35 comes from adding all three given lengths, 3.5 + 6.5 + 4, and treating that total as the area in square metres.)
- (c) 40.5 kg — Since the statues are made from the same material, mass is proportional to volume, which scales with the cube of the length scale factor. The length scale factor is 45 ÷ 30 = 1.5, so the volume (and mass) scale factor is 1.5³ = 3.375. The larger statue's mass is 12 × 3.375 = 40.5 kg. 18 kg comes from multiplying by the length factor 1.5 directly. 27 kg comes from using the area scale factor 1.5² = 2.25 instead of the volume scale factor. 54 kg comes from treating 'cubed' as 'multiplied by 3', giving 1.5 × 3 = 4.5 instead of 1.5³.
- (c) 27.7 cm — Arc length = (150 ÷ 360) × 2 × 3.14 × 6 = (5 ÷ 12) × 37.68 = 15.7 cm. The perimeter of a sector also includes the two straight radii, so perimeter = 15.7 + 6 + 6 = 27.7 cm. (15.7 cm comes from stopping after the arc length and forgetting the two straight edges; 21.7 cm comes from adding only one radius instead of two; 31.4 cm comes from doubling the arc length instead of adding the two straight edges.)
- (d) 71° — Alternate angles between parallel lines are equal. Since angle HMN and angle MNK are alternate angles, angle MNK = angle HMN = 71°.
- (d) DE = 8 cm — Method: use the stated correspondence ABC ≅ DEF to work out which side in DEF matches the known side AB in ABC. Working: the correspondence sends A to D, B to E and C to F, so AB corresponds to DE; the right angles at B and E and the equal hypotenuses AC = DF = 17 cm are already given, so DE = 8 cm supplies the third ingredient — Right angle, Hypotenuse, Side. Options: EF = 8 cm matches AB to the wrong side, since EF corresponds to BC, and BC = √(17² − 8²) = 15 cm, not 8 cm; BC = 8 cm states something about triangle ABC rather than the missing fact about DEF, and it is false as well, since BC = 15 cm; angle D = angle A does follow once the triangles are congruent, but RHS is completed by a matching side, not by a matching angle. Answer: DE = 8 cm.
- (b) 62 — Method: co-interior (allied) angles between parallel lines add up to 180°. Working: 180 − 118 = 62. Answer: 62°. A candidate who treats co-interior angles as equal, like corresponding angles, gives 118. A candidate who uses 360° instead of 180°, working out 360 − 118, gets 242. A candidate who subtracts as if the angles were complementary, working out 118 − 90, gets 28.
- (b) 46.8 cm² — Method: for a parallelogram, not a triangle, the two sides and the angle between them give Area = ab sin C — there is no 1/2. Working: Area = 6 × 9 × sin 60° = 46.8 cm² (1 d.p.). Answer: 46.8 cm². Using the triangle formula, (1/2)ab sin C, on a parallelogram by mistake gives half the true area, 23.4 cm²; using cos 60° instead of sin 60° gives 27.0 cm²; and adding the two sides before multiplying by sin 60° gives 13.0 cm². A parallelogram is exactly two of the triangles this formula was built for, so never carry the 1/2 across from the triangle version.
- (c) 450 m — To convert km to m, multiply by 1000: 0.45 × 1000 = 450 m. Multiplying by 100 instead of 1000 gives 45 m. Multiplying by 10 000 instead of 1000 gives 4500 m. Not converting at all, just relabelling the number, gives 0.45 m.
- (c) (−35, −55) — Add the three stages component by component to find the drone's position relative to base: (30+(−10)+15, 40+20+(−5)) = (35, 55). The flight back to base is the negative of this vector, reversing both numbers: (−35, −55). (35, 55) is the vector from base to the drone's position — it forgets to reverse direction for the return flight. (−35, 55) only reverses the top number. (35, −55) only reverses the bottom number.
- (b) 18.84 m² — The pond has radius 2.5 m (half of the 5 m diameter), so the outer edge of the path has radius 2.5 + 1 = 3.5 m. Path area = area of outer circle − area of pond = 3.14 × 3.5² − 3.14 × 2.5² = 38.465 − 19.625 = 18.84 m².
- (b) a rectangle — Lying on its side, the cylinder's curved surface touches the table along a straight line, and the two flat circular ends face sideways rather than up or down; viewed from directly above, the outline traced is a rectangle — as long as the cylinder and as wide as its diameter. "a circle" would be correct if the cylinder stood upright on one of its circular ends instead of lying on its side. "a triangle" belongs to a cone lying or standing so that it narrows to a point in that view, which a cylinder never does. "an oval" is a common guess from picturing the round ends, but from directly above those ends are edge-on and contribute to the rectangle's short sides, not a curved outline.
- (b) 10.5 — Method: multiply the drawing length by the scale factor to get the real length. Working: 7 cm × 1.5 = 10.5 m. A student who answers 8.5 has added the scale factor to the drawing length instead of multiplying (7 + 1.5). A student who answers 14 has rounded the scale factor up to 2 before multiplying. A student who answers 3.5 has divided the drawing length by 2 instead of multiplying it by 1.5. Answer: 10.5 m.
- (d) 7 cm — Area of a parallelogram = base × height, so height = area ÷ base = 84 ÷ 12 = 7 cm. A pupil who multiplies instead of dividing gets 84 × 12 = 1008 cm. A pupil who divides the base by the area instead of the area by the base gets 12 ÷ 84 ≈ 0.14 cm. A pupil who mistakenly halves the area first, as if this were a triangle, gets (84 ÷ 2) ÷ 12 = 3.5 cm. The correct height is 7 cm.
- (d) (9, −4) — Reflecting (1, 3) in the line x = 4 gives (2 × 4 − 1, 3) = (7, 3). Reflecting (7, 3) in the line y = 1 gives (7, 2 × 1 − 3) = (7, −1). Translating (7, −1) by the vector (2, −3) gives (7 + 2, −1 + (−3)) = (9, −4). Stopping after the two reflections and forgetting the translation gives (7, −1). Applying the translation's y-component with the wrong sign, adding 3 instead of subtracting it, gives (9, 2). Forgetting that the two reflections are centred on (4, 1) rather than the origin, and instead rotating (1, 3) by 180° about the origin to (−1, −3) before translating, gives (1, −6). Do all three steps in order, each one correctly, and the final image is (9, −4).
