- 1.In triangle ABC, AB = 9 cm, angle BAC = 50° and the area of the triangle is 36 cm². Work out the length of AC. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 2.Two hikers walk from a campsite A to a lookout B, a distance of 14 km on a bearing of 038°. From B they walk to a shelter C, a distance of 20 km on a bearing of 142°. Work out the direct distance from A to C. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 3.A parallelogram has an area of 84 cm² and a base of 12 cm. Work out the perpendicular height of the parallelogram.
- 4.A parallelogram has an area of 54 cm² and a base of 9 cm. Work out its perpendicular height.
- 5.A triangular sail for a small boat has a base of 2.4 m and a height of 1.75 m. Sailcloth costs £12.50 per m². Work out the total cost of the sailcloth needed for the sail.
- 6.In a right-angled triangle one of the other two angles is 45°, and the side opposite that 45° angle is 7 cm. Work out the length of the hypotenuse. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 7.A kite ABCD is symmetrical about the diagonal AC, with AB = AD = 6 cm and CB = CD = 9 cm. Angle ABC = 100°. By splitting the kite into two congruent triangles along AC, work out the area of the whole kite. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 8.A model car is built to a scale of 1 : 24. The real car is 4.32 m long. Work out the length of the model, in centimetres.
- 9.A ship's radar shows a lighthouse at the point (12, −4) on a grid measured in nautical miles. The ship is at (2, 5). The ship sails along the vector that takes it directly to the lighthouse, then sails along that same vector again. Work out the ship's final position.
- 10.A room measures 4.2 m by 3.6 m. A flooring company needs the area in cm² to order the right amount of vinyl flooring. Work out the area of the room in cm².
- 11.A drone flies from base station D on a bearing of 065° for 14 km to a checkpoint E. At E it changes course and flies on a bearing of 165° for 20 km to a delivery point F. Work out the direct distance from D to F. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 12.A boat sails from a harbour on a bearing of 090° for 24 km to a buoy, then changes course and sails on a bearing of 000° for 16 km to reach an island. Work out the direct distance from the harbour to the island. Give your answer correct to 1 decimal place.
- 13.A solid rubber ball has a radius of 3 cm. Work out the volume of the ball. Use π = 3.14.
- 14.A zip wire is fixed at an angle of 50° to the horizontal, running from a high platform down to the ground. The zip wire itself, from the platform to the ground, is 12 m long. Work out the horizontal distance covered by the zip wire. Give your answer correct to 1 decimal place.
- 15.A window is made from a rectangle with a semicircle on top. The rectangle is 40 cm wide and 60 cm tall. The semicircle has the same width as the rectangle. Work out the total area of the window. Use π = 3.14. Give your answer to the nearest whole number.
