- 1.A regular hexagon has sides of length 8 cm. By splitting the hexagon into 6 identical triangles that meet at its centre, work out the area of the hexagon. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 2.A shape is translated by the vector (5, −3), and the image is then translated by the vector (−5, 3). Which single transformation has the same overall effect as this combination, for every point?
- 3.In triangle ABC, angle ABC = 58°, angle ACB = 47° and BC = 14 cm. Work out the area of triangle ABC. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 4.The bearing of a campsite B from a walker's position A is 070°. What is the bearing of A from B?
- 5.A tent has the cross-section of a right-angled triangle. The sloping side of the cross-section is 10 m long, and it makes an angle of 60° with the horizontal ground. Using the exact value of cos 60°, work out the horizontal distance covered by the sloping side.
- 6.Triangle 1 has sides of 10 cm and 13 cm with an angle of 64° between them. Triangle 2 has sides of 11 cm and 12 cm with an angle of 70° between them. Which triangle has the greater area, and by how much? Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 7.A rectangular garden bed measures 5 m by 3 m. A semicircular flower border is attached along one of the 3 m-wide ends, on the outside of the rectangle, so that the 3 m side is the diameter of the semicircle. Work out the total perimeter of the combined shape (the two long sides, the one remaining short side, and the curved edge). Use π = 3.14.
- 8.A circular tabletop has a radius of 15 cm. Work out the area of the tabletop. Use π = 3.14. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 9.A circular pizza base has a radius of 12 cm. Work out the area of the pizza base. Use π = 3.14.
- 10.A circular decoration has a radius of 10 cm. A ribbon costs £0.50 per centimetre and is fixed along the curved edge (the arc) of a sector-shaped section with an angle of 90°. Using π = 3.14, work out the cost of the ribbon for this section.
- 11.A drone flies from base station D on a bearing of 065° for 14 km to a checkpoint E. At E it changes course and flies on a bearing of 165° for 20 km to a delivery point F. Work out the direct distance from D to F. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 12.A solid metal sphere has a radius of 5 cm. It is melted down and recast into a solid cylinder with the same radius, 5 cm. Work out the height of the cylinder, so that its volume equals the volume of the sphere. Use π = 3.14 and give your answer correct to 1 decimal place.
- 13.Two similar hexagonal tiles have lengths in the ratio 4 : 7. A side of the smaller tile is 8.4 cm long. Work out the length of the corresponding side of the larger tile.
- 14.Two cylindrical storage tins are geometrically similar. The smaller tin has height 4 cm and the larger tin has height 6 cm. Work out the ratio of the surface area of the smaller tin to the surface area of the larger tin, giving your answer in the form a : b in its simplest form.
- 15.A birthday cake is a cylinder of radius 10 cm and height 8 cm, with a thin ribbon fixed exactly once around the curved side, at half the height, and joined with no overlap. Work out the length of ribbon needed. Use π = 3.14.
