- 1.A garden is made of two triangular flower beds, ABC and ACD, joined along the edge AC. In triangle ABC, angle ABC = 90°, AB = 5 m and BC = 12 m. In triangle ACD, AD = 9 m and angle CAD = 40°, the angle between AC and AD. Work out the area of flower bed ACD. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 2.A round cake has a radius of 10 cm. Icing costs £0.02 per square centimetre. One slice of the cake is a sector with an angle of 90°. Using π = 3.14, work out the cost of icing the top of that slice, to the nearest penny.
- 3.A sector of a circle has radius 15 cm and angle 216°. Using π = 3.14, work out the arc length of the sector.
- 4.A triangular plot of land ABC is to be covered with turf. AB = 23.5 m, AC = 17.2 m and angle BAC = 108°. Turf costs £4.25 per square metre. Work out the cost of the turf for the plot. Give your answer to the nearest pound.
- 5.In a phone game, a character starts at the point (−5, 2) on a grid. It moves by the vector to collect a coin. The player now wants the character's next single move to finish at the point (3, 0). Write down the column vector of that second move.
- 6.A shopkeeper builds a display from two cuboid boxes, shown in the diagram. She wants to cover the front of the display with coloured paper. Work out the total area of the front elevation, in square centimetres.
- 7.A party hat is in the shape of a cone with a base radius of 6 cm and a slant height of 10 cm. Work out the curved surface area of the party hat. Use π = 3.14 and the formula curved surface area = πrl.
- 8.A triangular field ABC is to be fenced all the way round. AB = 45 m, AC = 38 m and angle BAC = 110°. Fencing costs £6.50 per metre. Work out the total cost of the fencing. Give your answer to the nearest penny.
- 9.A line joins the points A(0, 0, 0) and B(9, 12, 8) in a three-dimensional coordinate system in which the z-axis is vertical. Work out the angle this line makes with the horizontal (the xy-plane). Give your answer correct to 1 decimal place.
- 10.A solid ball has a radius of 7 cm. Work out the surface area of the ball. Use π = 3.14.
- 11.A right-angled triangle has a hypotenuse of 10 cm and one of its other angles is 45°. Work out the length of one of the two shorter sides. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 12.Triangle JKL has a right angle at K, hypotenuse JL = 13 cm, and side JK = 5 cm. Triangle MNO has a right angle at N, hypotenuse MO = 13 cm, and side MN = 5 cm. Using only the facts given, and without working out any further lengths, write down the congruence condition that proves triangle JKL is congruent to triangle MNO.
- 13.A drone starts at the point (3.5, −2) on a grid measured in metres. It flies by the vector to check a first sensor. The drone then needs to fly in a straight line to reach the point (−1.7, 9) to check a second sensor. Work out the column vector of this second flight.
- 14.A composite solid is made from a cylinder of radius 3 cm and height 10 cm, with a cone of the same radius and vertical height 4 cm fixed on top, apex upward. Work out the total volume of the solid. Use π = 3.14 and give your answer correct to 1 decimal place.
- 15.A circle has two straight radii drawn from the centre to the edge, together with the arc between them. Write down the name of the region enclosed by these two radii and the arc.
