- 1.A plan of a car park is drawn to a scale of 1 : 500. A parking bay is drawn as a rectangle measuring 1.2 cm by 0.6 cm. The real width of the bay corresponds to the 0.6 cm side. What is the real width of the bay, in metres?
- 2.In triangle ABC, AB = 8 cm, BC = 11 cm and AC = 6 cm. Work out the size of angle ABC. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 3.A solid metal sphere has a radius of 5 cm. It is melted down and recast into a solid cylinder with the same radius, 5 cm. Work out the height of the cylinder, so that its volume equals the volume of the sphere. Use π = 3.14 and give your answer correct to 1 decimal place.
- 4.A hiker walks on a bearing of 065°. She then turns clockwise through 90° and continues walking in a straight line. What bearing is she now walking on?
- 5.A triangular sail for a small boat has a base of 2.4 m and a height of 1.75 m. Sailcloth costs £12.50 per m². Work out the total cost of the sailcloth needed for the sail.
- 6.A window is made from a rectangle with a semicircle on top. The rectangle is 40 cm wide and 60 cm tall. The semicircle has the same width as the rectangle. Work out the total area of the window. Use π = 3.14. Give your answer to the nearest whole number.
- 7.In triangle ABC, AB = 9 cm, AC = 6 cm and angle BAC = 110°. Work out the length of BC. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 8.Two cylindrical storage tins are geometrically similar. The smaller tin has height 4 cm and the larger tin has height 6 cm. Work out the ratio of the surface area of the smaller tin to the surface area of the larger tin, giving your answer in the form a : b in its simplest form.
- 9.A model car is built to a scale of 1 : 24. The real car is 4.32 m long. Work out the length of the model, in centimetres.
- 10.A boat sails from a harbour on a bearing of 090° for 24 km to a buoy, then changes course and sails on a bearing of 000° for 16 km to reach an island. Work out the direct distance from the harbour to the island. Give your answer correct to 1 decimal place.
- 11.A water tank is a cube with edges of length 2 m. Work out how many cubic centimetres the tank holds when it is full.
- 12.A running track has a straight section and a semicircular bend. The bend is a semicircle with radius 32 m. Work out the length of the curved part of the bend, to 1 decimal place. (Use π = 3.14.)
- 13.Two straight roads cross at a junction. The angle between them, measured with a protractor, is 118°. What is the size of the angle vertically opposite to it?
- 14.In triangle ABC, AB = 10 cm, BC = 7 cm and angle ACB = 35°. Given that angle BAC is acute, work out the length of AC. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 15.A sailmaker cuts two triangular sail panels from a pattern. Panel X has a 10 m side, with angles of 50° and 75° at its two ends. Panel Y also has a 10 m side, with angles of 50° and 75° at its two ends, in the same arrangement. The sailmaker wants to check the panels will match exactly, without cutting a third measurement. Which condition proves the two panels are congruent?
