- 1.In triangle ABC, AB = 9 cm, AC = 6 cm, and angle BAC = 65°. Work out the length of BC. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 2.A boat sails from a harbour on a bearing of 090° for 24 km to a buoy, then changes course and sails on a bearing of 000° for 16 km to reach an island. Work out the direct distance from the harbour to the island. Give your answer correct to 1 decimal place.
- 3.A triangular sail for a small boat has a base of 2.4 m and a height of 1.75 m. Sailcloth costs £12.50 per m². Work out the total cost of the sailcloth needed for the sail.
- 4.A sector of a circle has radius 9 cm and angle 120°. Using π = 3.14, work out the arc length of the sector, to 1 decimal place.
- 5.A round cake has a radius of 10 cm. Icing costs £0.02 per square centimetre. One slice of the cake is a sector with an angle of 90°. Using π = 3.14, work out the cost of icing the top of that slice, to the nearest penny.
- 6.A circle has a diameter of 24 cm. A sector of this circle has an angle of 90°. Using π = 3.14, work out the area of the sector.
- 7.A garden is made of two triangular flower beds, ABC and ACD, joined along the edge AC. In triangle ABC, angle ABC = 90°, AB = 5 m and BC = 12 m. In triangle ACD, AD = 9 m and angle CAD = 40°, the angle between AC and AD. Work out the area of flower bed ACD. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 8.A warehouse stores identical cube-shaped crates. Its plan view is a 2 by 4 rectangle of crate positions, and every position is filled to a height of 3 crates, except one corner position, which has only 2 crates stacked on it because a delivery was incomplete. How many crates are there in total?
- 9.A square-based pyramid has a square base whose diagonal is 14 cm, and each slant edge of the pyramid, from a base vertex to the apex, is 15 cm. Work out the height of the pyramid. Give your answer correct to 1 decimal place.
- 10.A parallelogram has an area of 84 cm² and a base of 12 cm. Work out the perpendicular height of the parallelogram.
- 11.In triangle PQR, PQ = 8 cm and QR = 11 cm. Angle QPR = 50°. A student calculates the area of the triangle as Area = 1/2 × 8 × 11 × sin 50°. Is the student's method correct?
- 12.In triangle ABC, AB = 11 cm, AC = 9 cm and the area of the triangle is 45 cm². Given that angle BAC is obtuse, work out the size of angle BAC. Give your answer to 1 decimal place.
- 13.A party hat is in the shape of a cone with a base radius of 6 cm and a slant height of 10 cm. Work out the curved surface area of the party hat. Use π = 3.14 and the formula curved surface area = πrl.
- 14.Two bronze statues are geometrically similar and made from the same solid bronze. Their heights are 30 cm and 45 cm. The smaller statue has a mass of 12 kg. Work out the mass of the larger statue, in kg.
- 15.A triangular field ABC is to be fenced all the way round. AB = 45 m, AC = 38 m and angle BAC = 110°. Fencing costs £6.50 per metre. Work out the total cost of the fencing. Give your answer to the nearest penny.
